Physician Assistant: Hematology/Oncology

About the Role

With the supervision of a Physician (as per O.R.C. 4730), the Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C) provides medical care, diagnostic, and therapeutic interventions to patients with complex, acute, and chronic health conditions in a variety of clinical settings. This role requires the ability to work with autonomy within Ohio law under the direction of a supervising physician.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses health status by obtaining relevant health and medical history.
  • Performs a physical exam based on age and patient history as per the Supervisory Agreement with the Ohio State Medical Board (OSMB).
  • Identifies significant health and medical risk factors.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies to assess patient clinical problems and healthcare needs.
  • Develops a diagnosis by analyzing and synthesizing collected data.
  • Develops a treatment plan in collaboration with the patient, significant others, and supervising physician.
  • Performs diagnostic or therapeutic interventions consistent with certification, law, and hospital privileges.
  • May prescribe and monitor medications as allowed by prescriptive authority through the Ohio Board of Medicine and hospital policy.
  • Develops and implements a patient education plan.
  • Collaborates with nursing, medical, and other healthcare team members regularly to ensure quality patient care.
  • May serve as a clinical preceptor for PA students.
  • Participates in quality monitoring through record and treatment plan reviews for patient outcomes on a bi-annual basis to ensure quality care (via FPPE and OPPE for Advanced Practice Providers as part of Joint Commission requirements).

Inpatient Responsibilities

  • Provides medical care to patients with complex acute, critical, and chronic health conditions, including acute care services.
  • Practices with specialty-based populations, including neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients.
  • Works in settings requiring complex monitoring, high-intensity medical intervention, or continuous vigilance within high-acuity care.

Outpatient Responsibilities

  • Emphasizes health promotion, disease prevention, and the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic health problems.
  • Identifies patient and family needs for discharge, including education, equipment, home care, transportation, or referrals.
