Physician Assistant 1, Transplant Surgery - Multiple Positions

About the role

The Department of Transplant Surgery at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University seeks a full-time TH Physician Assistant 1.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate inpatients in conjunction with surgery residents when attendings are not immediately available and communicates effectively with physicians.
• Order and follow up on the scheduling and performance of diagnostic tests.
• Complete medication orders and monitor the performance of prescribed treatment plans.
• Collaborate with surgeons, residents, and nursing staff in interpreting clinical information.
• Liaise and communicate effectively with physicians from all departments, nursing, and ancillary staff to streamline patient care and reduce length of stay.
• Maintain oversight of day-to-day clinical events on post-operative patients and make treatment decisions based on clinical events while participating in discharge planning conferences/rounds with social workers and case managers.
• Adequately prepare patients for hospital discharge and ensure proper follow-up schedules are in place.
• Support perioperative care by networking with other clinical disciplines and support staff to expedite perioperative evaluations for inpatients and patients scheduled for future elective procedures, completing pre-op history and physicals.
• Support the Surgical Education Program by educating residents, medical students, and nursing staff in techniques of care for patients with surgical conditions.
• Demonstrate flexibility by performing additional job-related duties as business needs warrant and/or as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
• New York State Physician Assistant Licensure.
• Two years of hospital-based Physician Assistant experience.
• One year of experience in a General Surgery environment.
• BLS and ACLS Certification.
• Or, a satisfactory equivalent combination of experience, education, and training to the above qualifications.
