Qualifications

Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Duties

The provider evaluates, treats, and coordinates the care of patients with critical illness. He/she/they will perform this in the inpatient setting primarily within the surgical intensive care unit (SICU).

The provider will be part of a multidisciplinary team within the SICU and will be required to have strong interpersonal interaction skills. The nature of the job requires timely and effective communication with a variety of consultants, the Tele-ICU, and surgical services as part of the comprehensive care of patients with critical illness.

Affords assessments and management of critically ill perioperative patients in the surgical intensive care unit. Serves a patient population of simple to highly complex patients with significant comorbidities who are awaiting or have undergone diverse surgical procedures.

Identifies and intervenes upon patients who have deviated from the expected postoperative recovery trajectory. As necessary, performs routine invasive procedures common to critical care practice areas.

Work Schedule: Flexible with on-call responsibilities.
