Physical Therapist

Under general supervision, performs intermediate-level physical therapy work with limited decision-making, providing services to students including assessment, intervention planning and implementation, documentation, and communication. This position supervises Certified Physical Therapy Assistants and carries out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Executive Director of Exceptional Children.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures, as well as professional, ethical, and legal standards outlined in the NC Physical Therapy Practice Act, FERPA, and other mandates.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate physical therapy programs addressing educational goals; establish guidelines, procedural manuals, and program policies.
• Receive and record initial referral information; observe referred students and gather additional information from relevant sources.
• Conduct screenings and evaluations using formal and informal tests; document, analyze, and interpret data; convey findings to school teams and parents.
• Participate in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Section 504 Plans.
• Develop student-specific goals, coordinate services with school personnel, and consult with outside agencies.
• Provide direct and indirect physical therapy interventions; monitor and report student progress, modifying interventions as needed.
• Maintain student service, administrative, and departmental records in compliance with relevant policies.
• Communicate and collaborate with school staff, parents, administrators, community agencies, and health professionals.
• Serve as a resource on disabling conditions and their impact on education for parents, school teams, and district staff.
• Assess and recommend assistive devices for school function; participate in improving school accessibility and environmental modifications.
• Contribute to safe transportation planning for students with disabilities, including emergency evacuation consultation.
• Participate in transition planning from school to community, preparing students for independence from therapy services.
• Plan, coordinate, and provide training and continuing education for parents, school staff, community agencies, and medical professionals.
• Establish schedules and supervise physical therapist assistants and interns per the NC Physical Therapy Practice Act.
• Procure, maintain, and inventory equipment, materials, and supplies; participate in budget planning and policy development.
• Document needs and advocate for personnel and adapted equipment.
• Participate in professional groups and committees; pursue professional growth opportunities.
• Provide clinical educational opportunities for physical therapy interns.
• Complete required documentation for local, state, and federal purposes, including Medicaid reimbursement.
• Perform related work as assigned or required.

Requirements

• Minimum of a master’s degree in physical therapy (individuals previously hired with a bachelor’s degree are grandfathered in).
• Two (2) years of experience, preferably in pediatrics; participation in recent continuing education related to pediatric or school-based physical therapy.
• Graduation from an accredited physical therapy program and current licensure as a physical therapist by the North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy Examiners.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license or provide own transportation for travel to school district buildings and professional meetings.

Skills

• Comprehensive knowledge of physical therapy practices and regulatory requirements in the Pre-K–12 setting.
• Knowledge of county and school board policies, procedures, and standards.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in computers and software, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
• Ability to delegate, supervise, and problem-solve using sound judgment.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships; collaborate within and across departments, agencies, and the public.
• Ability to respond professionally to situations while maintaining a personable demeanor.
• Ability to use or learn specialized tools, equipment, or software.
