About the role

Under general direction, assesses, treats, and evaluates patients who require physical therapy services in collaboration with physicians, other healthcare providers, and patient/family.

Responsibilities

  • Provides physical therapy assessment, testing, treatment, and evaluation of patients in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Adheres to the regulatory and practice standards of physical therapy.
  • Documents evaluation outcomes, findings, and treatments.
  • May assist in coordination of patient discharge.
  • Educates patient/family with physical therapy exercises, activities, and equipment.
  • Maintains statistical information on referrals and treatments.
  • Evaluates durable medical equipment/devices based on CMS criteria for medical necessity and facilitates acquisition of those items.
  • Supervises, trains, and delegates activities of support staff, interns, and volunteers; develops staff skills and training plans.
  • Provides patient, family, and community education.
  • Acts as clinical instructor for student physical therapists; provides education and support opportunities for volunteers to observe; promotes the field of physical therapy.
  • Participates in care conferences, rounds, and various committees.
  • Educates staff on physical therapy issues.
  • Represents the organization at community and professional events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the regulations and practice standards of physical therapy.
  • Knowledge of direct patient care for physical therapy patients.
  • Knowledge of equipment and instruments used in daily activities.
  • Skill in assessing, treating, and evaluating physical therapy patients.
  • Skill in using applicable equipment and instruments.
  • Skill in effectively managing, leading, and training staff, and delegating tasks and authority.
  • Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
  • Skill in critical thinking in the performance of physical therapy.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others.

Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited college program.
  • Current Physical Therapist license in the State of Alaska, or current Physical Therapist license in another state but must obtain State of Alaska license within 6 months of hire.
  • Current Basic Life Support card required.

Depending on the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain additional certifications or training in one or more specialty areas.
