About the role

The Physical Therapist (PT) confirms and interprets physician referrals, performs patient assessments, and plans and implements individualized treatment programs. These programs consider the patient's developmental and/or chronological age and medical diagnoses, adhering to the regulations governing the principles and practice of Physical Therapy. This role is full time with an acute care patient base and is sign-on bonus eligible.

You will provide patient care based on physician referral and age-appropriate assessment, taking into account the patient’s developmental/chronological age and medical diagnoses when planning and implementing treatment programs to achieve goals set with the patient and/or family member.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate patient care and clinical activities through written and/or verbal communication with patients, families, therapists, Clinical Team Leaders, managers, physicians, and other members of the health care team.
  • Document in the patient’s medical record and complete other patient care-related forms in compliance with regulatory agencies and department/hospital policies and procedures.
  • Supervise PTAs and collaborate with other therapy staff, support staff, volunteers, and students to achieve efficient clinical activity and quality patient care.
  • Participate in patient care and departmental/professional activities such as presenting/attending in-services, performance improvement, program development/evaluation, new employee orientation, committee membership, peer review, and staff meetings.
  • Consistently deliver excellent customer service and patient care, demonstrating respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in each encounter with patients, families, visitors, and employees.
  • Champion Carilion's mission, vision, and values; comply with policies, procedures, ethical standards, and code of conduct.
  • Supervise Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) as provided by State of Virginia licensure/practice standards and Federal regulations.
  • Orient new employees and may provide guidance to volunteers, students, support, or contract staff.
  • Suggest cost containment initiatives in your immediate work unit/department.
  • Within the scope of your license, age-specific criteria, and per physician referral, interpret physician orders, perform patient assessments, and plan and implement individualized patient treatment programs.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily indoors in a clinical setting, including hospitals, nursing homes, or outpatient sites. You may be required to work at other Carilion facilities to meet staffing needs, in which case you will provide your own transportation. For Home Care Departments, work is performed at the patient’s home. Occasionally, work may be performed outside of a clinic setting, such as with driving programs, hydrotherapy, or home evaluations.

Work requires physical activity with patients, including lifting, manipulating, pushing, pulling, bending, and walking. Patients may weigh over 200 pounds. There is occasional exposure to serious injury and frequent environmental hazards, including blood and bodily fluids, requiring standard precautions. Home care practitioners must provide their own transportation and travel daily between patient homes.

You will demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and assess data reflective of the patient’s status. You will interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age-specific needs and provide care according to departmental policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved school of Physical Therapy.
  • Bachelor's degree as a Physical Therapist and 5 years of experience, OR Master's or Doctorate degree required.
  • Experience in site-specific level of care preferred but not required. For Home Health positions, one year of clinical experience is required.
  • Licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia by the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy.
  • AHA BLS-certified (from a Carilion approved program) within six months of employment.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, customer service, and teamwork skills.

Pay

Compensation range: $39.00 - $62.40 per hour. Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
