Responsibilities
- Develop a mastery of policy related to legislative requirements and Department / Interagency physical security standards.
- Draft, edit, and review documents for Department leadership, including waiver and exception requests.
- Survey and assess physical security conditions at Department facilities and residential properties overseas and domestically.
- Manage and mitigate risk associated with physical security vulnerabilities through facility security measures.
- Provide in-person and written briefings for Department leaders, oversight bodies, and other high-level U.S. Government decision-makers.
- Track and ensure compliance with residential security standards and budgets for RSOs overseas.
- Serve as primary points of contact for RSOs on the Department’s Soft Target program, providing expert advice on countermeasures.
- Coordinate design reviews of Office of Special Programs Board (OSPB) and General Services Administration (GSA) related projects to ensure compliance with standards.
- Support RSOs in preparing funding requests for soft target programs.
- Travel to overseas locations for facility surveys and briefings, often requiring long periods of standing, walking, and bending.
- Pass Department of State’s on-line High Threat Security Overseas Seminar training course and complete required on-line courses.
Requirements
- Active Secret clearance, with the ability to obtain a TS or TS/SCI.
- Expert-level knowledge of legislative and Department / Interagency standards and policy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Moderate levels of travel, often to locations further than 12 or more hours by air, with long periods of standing, walking, and bending.
- Ability to work in high threat environments.
- Successful completion of Department required on-line courses.
Qualifications
Physical Security Specialists must have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as security studies, criminal justice, or a related discipline. Relevant work experience in physical security, security operations, or security systems is preferred. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the Department.
