About the role

The PE teacher provides direct supervision of and instruction to students in a whole class setting. The PE and Health teacher will plan and execute lessons aligned to the Tennessee K-5 Physical Education Standards as well as the Tennessee K-5 Health and Wellness Standards. Teachers work closely with fellow teachers and the school administration to provide instruction and support to all students of the Academy.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains a clean, safe, orderly learning environment which contributes to children’s physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development.
  • Conscientiously supervises children.
  • Provides supervision during transitions to and from the Physical Education classroom, gymnasium, or outdoor facility.
  • Implements the school's programs and curricula, providing instruction directly aligned to the Tennessee Physical Education K-5 Standards.
  • Creates unit and lesson plans aligned to each of the Categories that comprise the Tennessee Physical Education and Health & Wellness K-5 Standards.
  • Establishes and implements behavior management in accordance with a positive behavior support approach.
  • Regularly assesses student performance.
  • Consistently meets requirements for timely filling of documentation as required, including injury or incident reports.
  • Consults with the administrative team as needed to provide input on curriculum and individual child supports.
  • Collaborates with classroom team members to coordinate and implement specific instructional strategies.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with students.
  • Responds to professional emails promptly.
  • Seeks outside resources (RA admin, faculty, consult therapists) as necessary to meet classroom and student needs.
  • Facilitates positive experiences for student workers, student volunteers, and practicum students at all levels.
  • Models desired practices for interactions with children (group or individual), preparation of the environment, and interactions with families.
  • Displays a commitment to elementary education and the education of students with dyslexia.
  • Attends and participates in required professional development or training.
  • Displays professionalism.
  • Follows guidelines and policies of RA and Vanderbilt University.
  • Upholds student and family confidentiality.
  • Interacts with students, parents, other staff, outside professionals, volunteers, and administration professionally.
  • Upholds the RA Mission.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and work experience with school-aged students is required.
  • Previous experience teaching physical education in an elementary school is preferred.
