About the role

The City of Phoenix Fire Department is seeking a Fire Protection Engineer to perform professional engineering work in the design, review, and inspection of fire protection systems and related projects. This position ensures compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations to enhance public safety within the City of Phoenix.

Responsibilities

• Review and approve plans for fire protection systems, including sprinkler systems, fire alarms, and smoke control systems.
• Conduct field inspections of fire protection systems to ensure compliance with approved plans and applicable codes.
• Provide technical expertise and guidance on fire protection engineering issues to developers, contractors, architects, and other city departments.
• Investigate and analyze fire incidents to determine causes and recommend improvements to fire protection systems and codes.
• Develop and update fire protection standards, policies, and procedures for the City of Phoenix.
• Prepare reports, correspondence, and presentations related to fire protection engineering projects.
• Collaborate with other city departments, state agencies, and professional organizations on fire protection initiatives.
• Stay current with advancements in fire protection technology, codes, and standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering field from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in fire protection engineering or a related field.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Arizona or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
• Knowledge of national and local fire codes, including NFPA, IBC, and IFC.
• Experience with AutoCAD, hydraulic calculation software, and other engineering tools.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a related field.
• Certification as a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) or similar credential.
• Experience working in a municipal or government setting.
• Familiarity with Phoenix Fire Code and City of Phoenix development processes.
