Phlebotomy Technician – FCC Hazelton, WV

Summary Of Duties

The Phlebotomy Technician will provide community-standard Phlebotomy services to inmates, including collecting blood, urine, and other samples such as DNA collection. This includes assisting with vaccination programs and updates to PPD testing.

Responsibilities

• Assisting clinical staff with patient flow by recording vital signs, scanning lab results into BEMR, and organizing, scheduling, and performing laboratory studies and specimen collection for routine care, in-processing, vaccinations, DNA procedures, and PPD updates.
• Collecting, preparing, packaging, and transporting laboratory specimens in accordance with contract requirements and BOP Reference Laboratory guidelines.
• Ensuring laboratory requests are completed accurately, and all laboratory reports are received, reviewed, and uploaded into the Bureau Electronic Medical Record (BEMR).
• Notifying laboratory providers in a timely manner.
• Aiding physicians, mid-level providers, nurses, and other clinical staff with patient flow by obtaining vital signs, measuring patient weight, and uploading laboratory results into BEMR.
• Following all standard infection prevention and control protocols.
• Aiding with patient discharge and ensuring patients understand follow-up care instructions.
• Cleaning, sterilizing, maintaining, and performing minor troubleshooting of laboratory equipment; reporting defective equipment for corrective action.
• Maintaining adequate laboratory and clinical supply inventories and notifying appropriate personnel when supplies require replenishment.
• Ensuring instruments and unauthorized items are properly secured and not left in patient care areas during non-patient care hours.
• Aiding with medical record audits and quality reviews.
• Collaborating with Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and contract reference laboratories, supporting CLIA recertification activities, and assisting the Health Services Administrator (HSA) and Clinical Director with developing and implementing laboratory policies and procedures.
• Performing clerical and administrative support duties, including using institution-specific computer systems such as SENTRY.
• Maintaining working knowledge of the Health Services Manual, laboratory procedures, and institutional policies, and ensuring the Laboratory Procedure Manual remains current.

Qualifications

• Valid certification to practice as a Medical Assistant, Laboratory Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, or Phlebotomist.
• CPR certification, in accordance with the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
• At least one (1) year of experience.
