About the role

This position may be located within a Hospital Facility, Patient Service Center (PSC), In Office Phlebotomy (IOP) or Mobile Diagnostic Services (MDS). This position may be responsible to provide coverage at multiple locations. Responsibilities include the collection and receipt of biological specimens, their proper entry into the company’s computer system, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and/or distribution of specimens to the proper analytical area. This includes responsibility for pre and post aspects of analytical testing, as well as performing specified analytical testing as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Ensure correct patient and specimen identification and specimen integrity by using appropriate techniques for all age criteria.
• In IOP locations, manage client relationships within Compliance regulations to meet needs and satisfy business objectives.
• Enter and verify patient demographics, location, physician data, tests requested, time and date of collection, clinical information, and other pertinent data for processing and billing.
• Verify accuracy of entered information and appropriateness of specimens received.
• Aliquot and label specimens according to established procedures, deliver specimens to technical areas, and/or perform initial processing and preparation for transport.
• Monitor workflow and assist in training new employees.
• Ensure all work performed is accurate and complete; complete documents legibly and accurately per site protocol.
• Follow established methods, practices, and departmental procedures; use appropriate documentation to record communications.
• Initiate computer-generated reports for patient reporting and quality assurance monitoring.
• Meet departmental standards for productivity and quality; maintain acceptable specimen rejection rates.
• Participate in departmental financial responsibilities through appropriate use of supplies and materials; avoid excessive waste.
• Participate in initiatives to reduce costs and improve service; possess basic knowledge of billing.
• Communicate courteously and professionally with internal and external customers; interact with co-workers with an emphasis on teamwork and customer service.
• Resolve basic service issues; attend meetings and remain current with internal/external communications.
• Acknowledge and understand the importance of ‘Patient Rights’ and privacy (HIPAA).
• Be available to work all areas/departments/shifts as assigned, including weekends, holidays, and overtime.
• For float positions: travel and flexible hours required to work multiple locations, including mobile phlebotomy facilities and in-office phlebotomy locations with minimal notice.
• May be required to work occasional on-call duties, weekends, evenings, and early mornings.

Requirements

• Minimum age requirement of 18.
• High School diploma or equivalent may be required dependent on state regulatory requirements.
• Basic knowledge of department resource materials.
• Completion of a phlebotomy program or phlebotomy experience.
• Phlebotomy certification as defined by state regulations.
• Position may require DHS Fingerprinting Certification or the ability to obtain fingerprint certification.
• Dependent on department/location, candidate must possess a valid state driver's license in the state of employment and be eligible for coverage under the company auto insurance policy.
• Progression through career ladder II-IV is subject to completion of career ladder requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual (Spanish/English).
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Additional related education and/or experience.
