Position Summary

Performs venipuncture and collects other specimens for laboratory testing. Labels specimen containers accurately, delivers to proper destinations in a timely manner, and performs order entry duties as required. Must be able to provide and understand the specific communication, developmental, and treatment needs of patients ranging in age from neonate-birth to geriatric.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: HS Diploma or equivalent
  • Accredited Phlebotomy Program
  • Experience: Draws an average of 7 patients per hour within the first 90 days of employment
  • Proficient in using Laboratory Information System within the first 90 days of employment
  • Licenses/Registrations/Certifications: ASCP eligible, BLS

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Procurement and distribution of specimens (blood, urine, etc.)
  • Computer data entry and operation of computer equipment
  • Answering incoming calls for the laboratory
  • Maintaining phlebotomy supply inventory and rotating supplies as needed
  • Performing breath alcohol and urine drug screen collections
  • Performing SLED collections
  • Responding to all traumas, code strokes, and codes sepsis in the ED
  • Responding to all medical alerts and emergencies for inpatient floors
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Understands and complies with the Standards of Behavior and department policies, procedures, and regulations.

  • Prepare and send out specimens for reference testing

Other Duties

  • Monitor phlebotomy supply inventory and rotate supplies as needed
  • Perform breath alcohol and urine drug screen collections
  • Perform SLED collections
  • Respond to ALL traumas, code strokes, and codes sepsis in the ED
  • Respond to ALL medical alerts and emergencies for inpatient floors
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Requires working irregular/flexible hours including holidays
  • Must have dependable transportation (including inclement weather)
  • Must be able to withstand the stress and demands of an active position
  • Must be able to withstand constant standing, walking, stooping, and bending
  • Must be able to respond calmly and efficiently in crisis situations
  • Must be able to work as a team member and interact positively with others
  • Must be able to work at optimum speed with accuracy and efficiency
  • Must be able to take directions and respond quickly and efficiently
  • Moderate lifting up to 50 pounds may be required
  • Position includes moderate chemical exposure

Skills

  • Sensitive touch for locating veins
  • Manual dexterity and coordination required for drawing blood
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of work-related information
