Phlebotomist PRN

As a Phlebotomist at our facility, you will be an integral part of our Laboratory team. We are a highly functioning team that supports many different departments and has a passion for providing the best patient care through compassionate, professional interactions and reliable testing.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to our mission including meeting behavioral expectations (compassion, caring and confidentiality), providing excellence in health care delivery, supporting dignity of all persons (empowerment), and responsible stewardship of resources.
• Receive orders either by telephone or requisition from nursing units or physicians; enter requests on computer by patient number, operator, and tests ordered.
• Travel to patient site, as necessary, to obtain specimens.
• Prepare skin site and perform venipuncture and skin punctures according to established aseptic techniques to obtain blood specimens in accordance with physicians' orders.
• Instruct patients in specimen collection methods and procedures (e.g., urinalysis and bacteriology), and obtain specimens for culture and analysis.
• Label and record specimens obtained, transport them to the laboratory, and distribute to appropriate laboratory area for analysis.
• Follow safety guidelines to maintain safety for oneself, patients, visitors, and co-workers. If classified as a category I or II employee under OSHA regulations, adhere to OSHA standards by wearing personal protective equipment, following universal precautions, and being knowledgeable about bloodborne pathogens.
• Collect blood samples and urine from patients for laboratory testing, including blood cultures.
• Register specimens and orders tests in LIS and prepare/label samples for internal or external testing.
• Communicate lab test requests and results to appropriate staff, departments, and/or physicians.
• Collect and document urine drug screens requiring chain of custody.
• Assist with in-services or training as assigned.
• Assist with administrative duties within the laboratory.
• Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Requirements

• Previous healthcare experience required; laboratory experience and knowledge of aseptic methods and basic medical terminology preferred.
• Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification.
• Minimum 6 months of phlebotomy experience or completion of a phlebotomy training program.
• American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support Course (BLS or BCLS) certification required within 30 days of hire.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Good communication and people skills.
• Analytical skills necessary to select the best site for obtaining blood and bacteriological specimens based on physicians' orders.
• Computer skills and filing/clerical skills.
• High attention to detail and accuracy.
• Does not pose a direct threat or risk to the safety and health of themselves and other employees.
