About the role
As a Lab Assistant / Phlebotomist, you will perform non-technical functions under supervision, including specimen collection, processing, submission to referral laboratories, and patient registration. Your role supports department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, and a healthy work environment.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of specimen collection and testing requirements, including specimen rejection criteria.
- Perform venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks on pediatric, neonatal, adult, and geriatric patients as required.
- Utilize supplies appropriately and follow established procedures for patient identification and specimen collection.
- Complete specimen collection documentation and educate patients/families on procedures.
- Use computer information systems for job functions and handle clerical duties (e.g., faxing, phones, pneumatic tube system).
- Prioritize tasks and plan for completion of duties, including reviewing the Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR).
- Receive, register, and order entry laboratory specimens accurately and in a timely manner.
- Label specimens and aliquots according to established protocols and testing requirements.
- Centrifuge and aliquot specimens based on type and tests ordered; prepare specimens for courier pick-up.
- Discard laboratory specimens according to established schedules and perform preventive maintenance and quality assurance procedures.
- Collect chain-of-custody drug collections per established policy, if required.
- Maintain records of specimen and procedural issues, taking corrective action to ensure testing validity and accuracy.
- Clean areas affected by emergency specimen spills.
- Assess and troubleshoot specimen requirements for referral testing, including order entry and specimen issues.
- Process, sort, and prepare specimens for submission to referral laboratories, monitoring status to ensure timely results.
- Communicate and troubleshoot problem specimens promptly.
Requirements
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and promote a harmonious, cooperative workplace.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service in all interactions.
- Effectively communicate technical information with personnel, customers, and physicians regarding specimen issues.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in registration, clerical duties, and specimen processing.
- Adhere to safety policies and procedures, including participation in the Privacy & Security Awareness program.
- Protect sensitive and confidential information and comply with company security policies.
- Complete assigned annual training courses and be available to work during disasters.
Qualifications
- Vocational/Technical degree preferred.
- 1-3 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred.
- Certification as a Phlebotomist, Medical Assistant, Paramedic, or EMT preferred.
