About the Role

As a Phlebotomist PRN with LewisGale Medical Center, you will ensure accurate specimen processing to maintain specimen integrity, perform registration procedures, and handle various clerical duties. This role involves effective communication and cooperation with others to optimize job performance and foster working relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Computer/Clerical:
    • Demonstrate efficient keyboarding and computer skills.
    • Compare patient information on requisitions with specimens received to ensure consistency and accuracy.
    • Accurately enter patient demographics, testing requests, and special instructions into the computer.
    • Interpret physician’s orders and seek clarification when needed.
    • Process drop-off orders from outside agencies.
    • Order and restock supplies; may be required to lift heavy objects.
  • Problem Solving:
    • Solve problems and recognize errors as they arise; refer unsolvable issues to appropriate personnel.
    • Identify and correct errors on requisition slips to ensure accurate results.
    • Assess situations from multiple perspectives and choose appropriate courses of action.
    • Adjust workload for STAT orders, drop-offs, admissions, outpatient walk-ins, and timed tests.
  • Communication/Patient Service:
    • Practice proper telephone etiquette and answer inquiries regarding tests; refer questions to appropriate departments.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
    • Adhere to lab dress code, including wearing a lab coat and gloves.
    • Communicate with patients professionally and courteously.
    • Display a helpful attitude in resolving client/department problems.
    • Acknowledge patients waiting for lab work if unable to draw at that moment.
  • Work Ethic/Professionalism:
    • Demonstrate a complete understanding of all tasks; no reminders needed.
    • Promote teamwork within the department.
    • Complete all work during the shift without sacrificing quality.
    • Demonstrate flexibility and dependability in modifying work schedule or location as required.
    • Arrive on time, begin work promptly, and stay until the end of the shift.
    • Return from breaks and lunches on time.
    • Follow Lab, CAP, HIPAA, Infection Control, and Safety Policies and Procedures.
    • Foster a positive work environment.
  • Lab Aide Specific Duties:
    • Know policies, procedures, and practices for specimen processing.
    • Ensure accurate specimen processing to maintain integrity.
    • Prepare and distribute specimens for testing, noting special requirements and prioritizing delivery.
    • Evaluate specimen acceptability for testing.
    • Make decisions and establish priorities based on established policies.
    • Work independently with limited supervision.
    • Process potentially infectious specimens for testing.
    • Understand patient registration functions related to referred lab specimens.
    • Perform registration procedures accurately to ensure regulatory compliance.
    • Demonstrate initial and annual competency in specimen processing, including computer-related functions.

Requirements

  • Ability to review and understand department and hospital manuals and procedures.
  • Clerical perception, attention to detail, and finger dexterity to rapidly and accurately transcribe data.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
