Job Title: Phlebotomist IIIJob Description The Phlebotomist III supports a busy clinical laboratory by performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections, troubleshooting issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements. This role requires strong technical phlebotomy skills, attention to detail in specimen handling and documentation, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while providing courteous, clear communication to patients and clinical staff. Responsibilities Perform blood draws and other specimen collections, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles, as well as urine and fecal specimen collection when required.Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.Collect, label, and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements, maintaining specimen integrity at all times.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately and verify that all test requisitions or computer labels match the script with 100% accuracy.Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.Package specimens for transport and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, ensuring correct labeling and adherence to temperature and handling requirements.Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures in accordance with laboratory protocols.Update patient information accurately in laboratory or clinical systems.Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct test processing and specimen handling.Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results as permitted, and respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control guidelines.Attend annual departmental trainings and stay current with procedural and regulatory updates.Assist with troubleshooting issues in specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency.Contribute to training and support of team members by sharing best practices and demonstrating correct phlebotomy techniques.Work as part of a small team, coordinating daily workload to manage approximately 15 patients per day.Perform phlebotomy on geriatric and hard-stick patients and, as needed, on pediatric patients, using appropriate techniques and patient care approaches. Essential Skills Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.5–7 years of overall experience in a related clinical or laboratory role.Proven proficiency in phlebotomy, including blood draws and venipuncture.Demonstrated experience with specimen collection and specimen processing.Ability to work confidently with geriatric and hard-stick patients.Ability to perform phlebotomy on pediatric patients when needed.Strong attention to detail in labeling, matching requisitions to specimens, and verifying test orders.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.Solid understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and safe laboratory practices.Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures and respond to patient and staff inquiries.Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and quality. Additional Skills & Qualifications High school diploma or GED.Experience working in a clinical laboratory or hospital setting with a consistent phlebotomy workload.Comfort working as part of a small team and coordinating daily patient flow.Experience updating patient information in electronic systems and maintaining accurate records.Familiarity with centrifugation, specimen splitting, freezing, and packaging for transport according to protocol.Ability to troubleshoot common issues in specimen collection and processing and suggest workflow improvements.Commitment to ongoing training and adherence to departmental policies and procedures. Work Environment This role is based primarily at a clinical site in Elgin, Texas, with the home base at a facility on Roy Rivers Road and occasional coverage at an additional location in Bastrop, Texas as needed. The work takes place in a fast-paced laboratory and patient service environment that handles a steady but manageable volume of approximately 15 patients per day. You will work closely with one other phlebotomist as part of a small, collaborative team. The position involves frequent interaction with geriatric and hard-stick patients, and may include pediatric patients, requiring a calm, professional, and patient-centered approach. The environment includes standard laboratory equipment such as needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage units, and requires adherence to OSHA and DEP safety regulations, infection control procedures, and proper handling of biohazard materials. Professional clinical attire appropriate for a laboratory and patient-facing setting is expected, and staff participate in regular departmental trainings to stay current with best practices and regulatory requirements. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Elgin, TX. Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is $24.59 - $24.59/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
