Position Overview
The Phlebotomy Technician Apprentice is enrolled in Singing River Health System's apprenticeship program, which includes 12 months of academic, clinical training, mentoring, and confidence-building. During the program, the apprentice performs venipunctures, heel and finger sticks, and other specimen collections for the clinical laboratory testing. They ensure appropriate specimens are collected from the proper patients and work effectively with various types of patients, including critically ill, trauma, newborn, geriatric, and outpatients in multiple outpatient settings. Duties must be performed in accordance with Singing River Health System procedures, policies, and guidelines.
Education
- High school graduate or equivalent required
- Some college with courses in a health or science-related field preferred
Certifications
- Obtain a Phlebotomy certification from an approved agency within 6 months of the training program completion
- Certification must be from one of the following: ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification), APA (American Phlebotomy Association), AMT (American Medical Technologists), or NHA (National Health Career Association)
Experience
- Phlebotomy experience preferred
Physical Demands
- Moderately active work involving frequent movement between office and facility locations
- Exposure to bodily fluids, sputum, and tissues that may carry infectious diseases
- Repetitive wrist, hand, and finger motions while operating standard office equipment
- Close visual acuity and ability to adjust focus between computer screens and printed materials
- Ability to work independently, adapt to workload demands, set priorities, and understand and set goals

- Superior communication skills, both verbal and written
- Emotional stability conducive to handling high-stress levels
- Ability to multi-task in complex situations

- Superior customer service skills and professional etiquette

- Understanding of automated data processing and complex computerized and non-computerized information within allotted timeframe
