About the Role

Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC) is a public, open-access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System, serving the counties of Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, and Botetourt (northern half). MGCC is seeking adjunct faculty members in Philosophy to teach on-ground courses at the Clifton Forge Campus.

Adjunct faculty are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in a classroom environment to students with diverse academic backgrounds and experiences. Courses may be delivered in person on the main campus or at the Rockbridge Regional Center (RRC).

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver Philosophy courses in a classroom setting.
  • Engage students with varied academic backgrounds and learning needs.
  • Utilize relevant technology and learning management systems to facilitate teaching, learning, assessment, and communication.
  • Maintain consistent communication and provide virtual support mechanisms to ensure student success.
  • Teach in multiple modalities, including virtual environments, as required.
  • Complete required training: Growing with Canvas and TOPS 2.2 prior to teaching.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including assisting during emergency declarations by the Governor.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Philosophy or a related field with at least eighteen (18) graduate-level credit hours in Philosophy from an accredited institution. Official transcripts will be required prior to final offer.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency with relevant technology and learning management systems.
  • Commitment to student engagement and success in both in-person and online teaching environments.
  • Access to reliable Wi-Fi and technology (e.g., computer) to support remote teaching.
  • Demonstrated competency and commitment to continuous professional development in virtual education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of teaching experience.
  • Work experience in the field of Philosophy.
  • Substantial, proven experience with innovative teaching and developing online courses in both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments at a regionally accredited institution.

Pay

$700 - $1,200 per credit hour, depending on years of experience and educational attainment.

Schedule

Hours vary based on college needs. Day and evening positions are available.

You may be expected to travel to all college locations.
