Pharmacy Technician Supervisor
About the role
Reports to the Pharmacy Manager. Under the supervision of a Pharmacy Supervisor, this role oversees the activities and functions of pharmacy group leaders, pharmacy technician specialists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy student interns, and technician externs within assigned areas of the department. Responsibilities include creating job roles, developing assignments, managing work schedules, designing training plans, and ensuring equitable staffing to support operational needs. The role also involves holding staff accountable for performance and professionalism, preparing performance evaluations, and collaborating with supervisors and managers to develop departmental goals and implement new workflow initiatives.

Responsibilities
- Supervises pharmacy technician group leaders, specialists, technicians, student interns, and externs.
- Assists in creating job roles and responsibilities, develops assignments, and manages work schedules and training plans.
- Provides functional guidance to pharmacy technicians in assigned areas.
- Prepares and issues annual performance evaluations.
- Ensures compliance with established policies, procedures, and labor contracts; recommends and implements operational changes to increase efficiency.
- Participates in recruitment, retention, development, and competency assessment of pharmacy technicians.
- Develops standards and tools to improve technician competency, including orientation, in-service training, and demonstrable competencies.
- Provides actionable feedback to promote teamwork and workplace satisfaction.
- Communicates operational changes and quality improvement activities effectively.
- Mentors and coaches pharmacy technicians to support their professional goals.
- Participates in department-wide quality assessment, performance improvement, and medication safety initiatives.
- Supervises quality assessment processes, preventive maintenance of equipment, and drug refilling processes with safety checks.
- Oversees pharmacy information systems, electronic drug dispensing systems, and other automated technologies.
- Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations for sterile and non-sterile compounding (e.g., USP Chapters 797, 800, and 795).
- Monitors medication distribution to pharmacy satellites and off-site treatment areas.
- Oversees medication and supply purchasing, recall processes, and annual medication inventory.
- Ensures quarterly quality assurance inspections are completed.
- Performs duties of other pharmacy technician job categories as needed.

Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent; completion of one to two years of college preferred.
- Current unrestricted Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician licensure.
- Current National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT).
- Two to three years of experience as a technician group leader or specialist, or five years of progressively responsible technician experience, preferably at a Brown University Health affiliate.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver medication delivery equipment and pharmaceutical inventories.
- Extended periods of standing and walking.
- Visual and manual dexterity to operate a computer.
- Occasional travel between facilities or sites.
Independent Action
Performs independently within department policies and practices. Refers complex problems to the Pharmacy Manager for clarification of policies and procedures.
Supervision
Indirect supervision of up to 25 FTEs.
Pay
$64,480.00 - $106,412.80 per year.
Schedule
- Monday to Friday, 6:30 AM - 5:30 PM (variable).
- Administrative on-call duty every 4th week.
- 8-hour daily shifts.
