About the role
The Pharmacy Tech role supports the Department of Pharmacy by performing a variety of technical, clerical, dispensing, inventory, preparation, and delivery tasks with a focus on accuracy and patient safety.
Responsibilities
- Works under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and all medication-related activities must be checked and approved by a pharmacist.
- Demonstrates flexibility in working rotating day, evening, and overnight shifts as well as holidays and weekends as assigned.
- Manages Pyxis inventory by performing accurate drug selection, refilling, loading, stock rotation, and expiration date entry of medications in the Pyxis machines.
- Ensures appropriate and secure handling and management of controlled substances from receipt to delivery per established department policies/procedures and government regulations.
- Ensures removal of expired/damaged products from Pyxis machines, medication rooms, and pharmacy inventory in a timely fashion.
- Aids pharmacists in providing timely pharmacy services including drug delivery, resolution of Pyxis and Talyst problems, urgent patient care needs, and routine patient-specific unit dose medication selection.
- Prepares and fills all medication requests, floor stock requests, emergency code trays, EMS needs, and various medication kits.
- Performs controlled substance inventory, reviews controlled drug utilization reports, and other various requirements per departmental policies.
- Maintains refrigerator, freezer, and room temperature logs per departmental and regulatory requirements.
- Performs billing/charging duties as required.
- Completes medication room and pharmacy inventory inspections monthly according to department policies/procedures.
- Receives, inventories, and puts away the wholesaler medication order with accuracy and in compliance with USP Hazardous Drugs, 340B regulations and Verify on Receipt software.
- Understands the importance of bar code and NDC accuracy for inventory when scanning medications, packaging medications into unit of use containers, and maintaining accurate documentation.
- Manages, operates, triages, and performs preventative maintenance on pharmacy equipment safely and correctly.
- Completes continuous training and education, department-specific competencies, regulatory compliance where applicable, and organizational requirements as assigned.
- Complies with departmental organizational policies and procedures and external agency requirements.
- Performs purchasing duties in compliance with 340B and Drug Supply Chain Security Act requirements and exercises fiscal responsibility.
- Triages medication needs and requests via the electronic health record (Epic).
- Prepares extemporaneous non-sterile preparations according to USP795 regulations.
Qualifications/Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent required.
- Active pharmacy technician state registration (CT license) required.
- National pharmacy technician certification (CPhT) required. Will allow up to six (6) months from date of hire to obtain for continued employment.
