Pharmacy Technician – Medication Access Programs
About the role
The Pharmacy Technician - Medication Access Programs facilitates timely initiation of therapy through benefit investigation, prior authorization support, payer and formulary navigation, financial assistance coordination, and medication access workflow management. This role partners with providers, pharmacy, infusion operations, revenue cycle, patient assistance, and technology teams to reduce barriers to therapy, improve patient and provider experience, and support efficient, compliant, and patient-centered medication access services across the enterprise.
Responsibilities
- Cook up medication access services through referral intake, benefit investigation, prior authorization support, financial assistance enrollment, and submission of required documentation to facilitate timely initiation of therapy
- Manage medication access workflows by collaborating with providers, pharmacy, infusion operations, revenue cycle, manufacturers, and assistance programs to reduce barriers and support patient access outcomes
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic health record and applicable tracking systems while ensuring compliance with established workflows, policies, and regulatory requirements
- Monitor and coordinate ongoing medication access activities including refill support, authorization renewals, financial assistance recertification, and proactive follow-up to support continuity of therapy
- Protect patient confidentiality and maintain compliance with organizational policies, HIPAA requirements, and medication access program standards
- Support operational excellence through participation in audits, reporting, training, workflow improvement initiatives, and other activities that promote quality and service performance
Qualifications
- Education Program Graduate, Pharmacy Technician Training Program or equivalent (Preferred)
- Program Graduate, Licensed Practical Nurse (Required)
- Program Graduate, Certified Medical Assistant (Required)
- Experience 3-4 years Experience as a Pharmacy Technician, LPN or CMA (in lieu of education) (Required)
- 1 year Experience obtaining and managing medication prior authorization as part of job function (Preferred)
- 1 year Prior experience obtaining and managing patient assistance program applications (Preferred)
Skills And Abilities
- Familiar with medical and pharmacy terminology
- Prescription drug and over-the-counter knowledge
- Basic math skills, including pharmaceutical calculations
- Basic pharmacy workflow
- Understanding of pharmacy computer systems
- Ability to navigate and read electronic health record
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to prioritize, problem solve and multi-task
- Excellent customer service skills
- Knowledge of patient assistance programs
- Experience with prior authorization of medications
- Strong organizational skills and detail oriented
Licenses and Certifications
- Registered Pharmacy Technician - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) Upon Hire (Required)
- Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) PTCB or ExCPT Upon Hire (Required)
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) Upon Hire (Required)
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) Upon Hire (Required)
- Advanced certification in specialty pharmacy field (PTCB, ASHP, NCODA and other approved programs) (Preferred)
Benefits
Actual pay is determined based on job-related factors such as relevant experience, education, credentials, skills, internal equity, and business needs.
