Pharmacy Technician IV Specialist-Home Infusion – Sharp Grossmont – Day Shift – Per Diem

Shift start and end times are variable within 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Weekend work and on-call shifts are required as needed.

Pay

The hourly pay range is $30.98 – $43.37, with a midpoint of $38.73. Actual pay will depend on experience, skills, education, internal equity, and market factors.

Responsibilities

• Assist the pharmacist in providing pharmaceutical services that support the mission, values, and philosophy of Pharmacy Services and Sharp HealthCare.
• Perform technical tasks involved in the preparation, documentation, and distribution of intravenous medications.
• Provide operational, developmental, and quality-assurance support for IV admixture programs.

IV Medication Dispensing & Clinical IV Practice

• Prepare IV admixtures with high accuracy using strict aseptic technique, correct medications, and precise calculations.
• Utilize available sterile-compounding technologies and follow established guidelines.
• Handle and prepare chemotherapeutic agents using appropriate precautions and in accordance with USP 800 guidelines.
• Organize workload to meet batch delivery times and perform primary label checks for completeness.
• Obtain pharmacist verification before dispensing IV admixtures and respond to STAT, ASAP, and now medication orders.
• Recycle IVs where possible, remove expired products, and maintain a clean, orderly IV area.
• Communicate workload or operational issues to supervisors promptly and prioritize tasks to support smooth pharmacy operations.
• Maintain high accuracy in selecting, ordering, and restocking medications.

Hazardous/Chemotherapy Preparation

• Demonstrate competency in hazardous medication and chemotherapy compounding per USP 800 guidelines.
• Properly handle and prepare chemotherapeutic agents using appropriate precautions and Closed System Transfer Devices (CSTD).

Equipment Maintenance and Monitoring

• Monitor hood inspection dates and facilitate the inspection process.
• Check, clean, or replace laminar hood pre-filters monthly and maintain documentation.
• Document cleaning of horizontal laminar flow hoods/Biological Safety Cabinets and perform tubing, IV solution changes, equipment setup, testing, and calibration.
• Monitor and document refrigerator/freezer temperatures and remove outdated medications.
• Maintain a neat, organized work area and ensure proper pharmacy waste stream integrity.

Medication Safety

• Proactively identify potential medication safety improvement opportunities (e.g., look-alike/sound-alike medications, storage, security, inventory management).
• Participate in medication safety initiatives to prevent or reduce medication safety events.
• Adhere to medication safety communications and initiatives from pharmacy management and the Safe Medication Practice team.
• Engage in surveillance initiatives such as Pyxis override report monitoring, controlled substance audits, and medication safety event reporting.

Sterile Product Quality Assurance

• Perform environment monitoring for sterile compounding quality assurance, including air and surface testing.
• Conduct process validation for all staff and ensure clean-down tasks (daily, weekly, monthly) are completed.
• Monitor hazardous drug residue testing and ensure timely completion of sterile product room quality assurance tasks.
• Supervise and confirm process validations (PVs), including handwashing, garbing, gloved fingertip testing, hood cleaning, PATT2, TPN, chemo validation, and HD surface sampling.
• Pull and file media kits certificate of analysis.

Purchasing

• Initiate ordering and receiving of controlled substances, ensuring no discrepancies or deviations from practice standards.
• Order enteral formula, bags, TPN electrolytes, solutions, and supplies.

Communication and Teamwork

• Demonstrate self-motivation, cooperation, teamwork, initiative, and flexibility to meet organizational and departmental goals.

Delivery Coordination

• Pull medications and supplies, prioritize order processing, and update inventory.
• Order drugs and supplies and determine delivery priorities.
• Coordinate with the driver coordinator to ensure timely and efficient medication deliveries across the San Diego region.
• Log and update delivery tickets as necessary and communicate with various disciplines/departments for timely medication processing and delivery.

Requirements

• 1 year of experience in a hospital pharmacy environment or equivalent intravenous sterile compounding experience.
• California Pharmacy Technician License (TCH) – CA State Board of Pharmacy (required).

Preferred Qualifications

• Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) – Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
