Pharmacy Technician - Certified - Per Diem

Location: Rochester General Hospital, Inpatient Pharmacy – Per Diem, Days & Evenings with rotating weekends.

About the Role

Under pharmacist supervision, you will respond to and triage nursing phone calls, prepare medication orders, accurately deliver medications, restock supplies, and provide superior customer service by modeling the organization’s values.

Responsibilities

• Properly operate the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
• Round to the floors accurately and in a timely manner to deliver medications.
• Recognize medication names and medical abbreviations.
• Use the pharmacy information system to run reports and access basic medication data.
• Prepack bulk medicines into individual, unit-dose packaging, including proper cleaning, maintenance, and use of the repackaging machine.
• Perform non-sterile compounding and preparations of oral liquids, creams, and ointments in a clean environment, including proper measuring, combining, and documentation.
• Fill patient orders with prescribed medications, complete appropriate documentation, and affix patient information labels.
• Fill various emergency boxes, scan medications for expiration dating and strength, and obtain pharmacist sign-off.
• Deliver medications or pharmaceutical supplies to patients, nursing stations, or surgery.
• Properly handle and dispose of narcotics according to hospital guidelines, ensuring proper storage and security.
• Demonstrate knowledge of and proper practice of aseptic technique in the IV room.
• Add measured drugs or nutrients to intravenous solutions under sterile conditions to prepare intravenous (IV) packs under pharmacist supervision.
• Transfer medication from vials to sterile, disposable syringes using aseptic techniques.
• Receive and store incoming supplies, verify quantities against invoices, check for outdated medications, and inform supervisors of stock needs and shortages.
• Answer telephones and respond to questions or requests.
• Perform clerical work in medical settings.
• Recognize medication errors, misprints, or potential contraindications.
• Possess advanced knowledge of the Automatic Dispensing Machine (ADM) and troubleshoot/repair as necessary.
• Participate in process improvement initiatives, such as safety and identifying methods to improve current practices.
• Assist in training new hires.
• Demonstrate advanced knowledge of IV procedures.
• Batch medication/narcotic drips and order supplies.
• Additional ambulatory pharmacy responsibilities:
  • Assist customers promptly and courteously while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Obtain and record patient personal, medical (allergies/conditions), and insurance information.
  • Assist in filling prescriptions for pharmacist verification, including pulling drug products and assessing reorder status.
  • Process refill requests through automated systems and phone calls, ensuring proper communication to pharmacists.
  • Compile and file prescription hard copies in numerical order daily.
  • Maintain a clean, uncluttered work environment and routinely clean shelves and storage areas.
  • Use the wholesaler computer system to compile and send orders, assess product availability, and communicate backorders to staff.
  • Check in pharmaceutical orders, verify invoices/packing slips, stock drug products/supplies, and maintain adequate dispensing supplies.
  • Complete "Return to stock" tasks and report information to the accounts manager.
  • Conduct monthly checks for outdated drugs, log and remove items, including controlled substances (CIIs).
  • Assess cash register for appropriate change throughout the day and retrieve funds as needed.
  • Balance the cash register at the end of the day, make daily deposits, and secure funds in a safe.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• National Pharmacy Technician Certification (required).
• NYS OOP Registered Pharmacy Technician within 6 months of hire (required).

Preferred Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills for routine interaction with hospital staff.
• Pursuing additional certifications.
• 1 year of experience working with a frail or elderly population.
• 1 year of work experience in a clinical, retail, or healthcare setting.

Physical Requirements

Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires frequent walking, standing, or squatting.

Pay

Pay Range: $19.50 - $23.00 per hour.
