Pharmacy Technician - Certified - Inpatient
About the role
This position delivers medications to designated areas under close supervision and according to detailed instructions, policies, and procedures. Responsibilities include refilling and maintaining automated dispensing machines, pricing manual medication orders, inventorying and reordering pharmacy stock, entering data into computer systems, printing labels, reviewing physician's orders, entering patient medication orders, identifying order issues, and notifying pharmacists or nursing staff when clarification or additional patient information is needed. The role also involves accurately compounding IV admixtures and other preparations using aseptic technique, maintaining stock in assigned areas, and performing related clerical duties such as typing, answering phones, filing, and assisting nurses and physicians at the pharmacy window.
Responsibilities
- Ensures customer service and teamwork while conducting responsibilities.
- Fills medication orders, charges/credits all medication, stocks, delivers, and inspects assigned areas.
- Prepares IV admixtures and other extemporaneous compounds and enters TPN orders into the computer system.
- Maintains competency in professional growth and responsibilities.
- Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including respect for privacy, method of introduction, adapting explanations, requesting permissions, and communication style.
- Remains knowledgeable on current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, or regulatory agency requirements and ensures compliance.
- Other related duties as required.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent (required).
- Current Pharmacy Technician Certification issued by the Board of Pharmacy in the state of practice (required).
- 1 year of hospital experience (preferred).
- Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
- Proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
- Skills to operate standard pharmacy and office equipment.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to travel throughout and between facilities.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule (e.g., 24/7, weekend, holiday, on-call availability).
Physical and Environmental Demands
Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements exceed those for Sedentary Work, including significant walking or standing, pushing or pulling arm or leg controls, or working at a production-rate pace.
Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid, or tissue, and incumbents are not called upon to perform or assist in emergency care or first aid. There is no occupational risk for exposure to communicable disease. However, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning, and/or disposal of contaminated waste.
