Pharmacy Technician
About the role
Under the direct supervision of New Horizon Family Health Services Lead Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician assists the Pharmacist in performing all routine tasks and managing all aspects of the Pharmacy Department in accordance with established policies, procedures, and state regulations.
Responsibilities
- Assist patients dropping off or picking up prescription orders
- Create or update patient profiles with demographic and insurance information
- Assist the pharmacist in providing safe and effective pharmacy services
- Prepare prescriptions: select drugs/devices, place medications in containers, and label appropriately
- Accept written, electronic, or verbal telephone prescription orders
- Conduct prescription transfers and receive verbal refill requests from patients
- Perform initial interpretation of licensed practitioner prescription orders
- Verify customers receive correct prescriptions at point of sale
- Check in wholesale orders, stock merchandise, and verify paperwork
- Screen and manage drug expiration dates, adjust inventory, and process return paperwork
- Stock automatic dispensers (if applicable)
- Return prescriptions to stock according to pharmacy procedures
- Communicate with prescribers to obtain refill authorization
- Maintain knowledge of loss prevention techniques
- Ensure orderly workflow for pharmacy staff
- Maintain accurate cash register sales and records
- Enter prescription orders into the computer system
- Communicate with insurance carriers to obtain payment for prescription claims
- Assist the pharmacist with filling and labeling prescriptions
- Prepare and maintain pharmacy inventory
- Compound oral solutions, ointments, and creams
- Stay informed about developments in the community and pharmaceutical fields
- Assist in training new pharmacy employees
- Support other pharmacy technicians as needed
Requirements
- State Certified Pharmacy Technician registration in good standing with the SC Board of Pharmacy
- Current National Pharmacy Technician Board Certification (PTCB or ExCPT)
- Minimum 3 years of pharmacy technician experience preferred
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED equivalent
- Completion of a pharmacy technician training program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) per SC Board of Pharmacy regulations
