Pharmacy Technician

About the role

At Nevada Heart and Vascular Center (NHVC), the Pharmacy Technician plays a critical clinical role focused on ensuring patient medication orders are filled quickly and accurately. This position involves communicating with various members of the patient care team and submitting documents to pharmacies, insurance companies, and infusion centers. The Pharmacy Technician interprets physician pharmacy orders with precision to ensure high-quality patient care. The role reports directly to the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, with additional direction from the Nurse Manager and clinic physicians.

Responsibilities

• Follow all policies, procedures, and directives from administration, including OSHA Safety Manual, Corporate Compliance Manual, HIPAA Compliance Manual, Employee Handbook, and departmental policies.
• Arrive at scheduled start time unless approved by management.
• Refill patient medication orders in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) or by fax, precisely as received from the prescribing physician.
• Submit prior authorizations to insurance companies to ensure drug coverage for patients.
• Communicate with patients regarding medication refill requests and drug coverage while maintaining a courteous and professional demeanor.
• Converse with pharmaceutical representatives in a competent and polite manner as a representative of NHVC.
• Respond to fax messages from pharmacies in a timely manner.
• Submit infusion medication documents, patient demographics, laboratory results, and patient medical record notes to infusion centers.
• Answer multi-line telephone calls from various outside sources, representatives, and patients.
• Read and interpret physician orders.
• Accurately review, analyze, and update patient medical records.
• Attend staff meetings and training courses as needed.
• Provide sample medication(s) to patients under the direction of the physician.
• Complete other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Nevada State Pharmacy Technician license, approved by the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy.
• General computer skills with working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and email applications.
• Detail-oriented with strong analytical and organizational skills.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills, with the ability to work cohesively within a team environment.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively converse with patients, staff, physicians, pharmacists, all levels of management, and outside sources.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a cardiology practice.
• Familiarity with cardiac medications.
• Bilingual skills.

Physical Requirements

• Visual and auditory acuity necessary for communication with employees, physicians, and patients.
• Ability to see written documentation and speak/hear for effective communication.
• Ability to use office equipment including PCs, copiers, fax machines, and multi-line telephones.
• Occasional lifting of heavy or awkward items, walking, bending, and stretching in a clinical office setting.
