About the Role

Join Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital in Mooresville, North Carolina, a 123-bed facility offering a comprehensive range of medical services, including 24-hour emergency care, cardiology, orthopedics, women's services, and surgical specialties. We are seeking Pharmacy Technicians at two levels to support safe medication use through procurement, preparation, distribution, and storage of drugs, as well as assisting with clinical pharmacy services.

Responsibilities

Pharmacy Tech I

• Accurately and efficiently follow workflow procedures, including prescription processing, medication preparation, and distribution to patients.
• Restock automatic dispensing cabinets and anesthesia workstations as needed.
• Answer and screen telephone calls, directing them to appropriate personnel.
• Handle medications in accordance with department, regulatory, and legal requirements (e.g., medication records, pulling outdated/unusable medications).
• Collaborate with the pharmacy team, insurance companies, and customers to resolve medication or insurance-related concerns.
• Assist with basic clinical functions in support of the clinical pharmacist (e.g., medication safety and adherence initiatives, patient follow-up calls).
• Operate and provide basic technical support for specialty machinery, equipment, or software (e.g., carousels, automated dispensing cabinets, compounders).
• Deliver medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas.
• Complete and document all assigned safety and quality activities in compliance with department procedures.
• Prepare IV solutions using aseptic technique and/or compound non-sterile medications at select locations.
• Manage individual responsibilities while supporting team members and contributing to broader team goals.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Pharmacy Tech II

• Perform a variety of clinical functions in support of the clinical pharmacist (e.g., patient interviews, medication safety and adherence initiatives, patient follow-up calls, collection of clinical data).
• Operate and troubleshoot specialty machinery, equipment, or software as necessary (e.g., carousels, automated dispensing cabinets, compounders).
• Manage individual responsibilities while assisting team members and contributing to broader team goals with minimal supervision.
• Assist with training new employees and students in job-specific functions.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Pharmacy Tech I

• One of the following:
  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited pharmacy technician-training program.
  • Acceptance into pharmacy school.
  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year of pharmacy or health care-related experience.
• Must be registered with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy within the first 180 days.

Pharmacy Tech II

• One of the following:
  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited pharmacy technician-training program.
  • Acceptance into pharmacy school.
  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year of pharmacy or health care-related experience.
• Minimum of one year of related experience.
• North Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration is required.
• Pharmacy Technician certification is required from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT).

Skills

• Considerable knowledge of drug names, medical terminology, and pharmaceutical calculations.

• Excellent customer service skills, including prioritizing the needs of patients and multidisciplinary team members while displaying empathy.

Physical Demands

• Ability to perform the job while standing, reaching, stretching, and sitting for prolonged times.
• Manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer and dispensing functions of the job.
• Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. while walking, stooping, bending, and reaching.
