Position Summary
The Pharmacy Technician at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System supports the pharmacy department by preparing, dispensing, and distributing medications under the supervision of a pharmacist. Key responsibilities include verifying medication orders, maintaining patient profiles, managing inpatient supplies, preparing extemporaneous medications, and communicating with patient-care areas.
Responsibilities
- Fills medication orders and outpatient prescriptions, which are verified by the pharmacist.
- Maintains the computerized patient profile system and related transactions.
- Ensures a 24-hour inpatient medication supply is maintained.
- Prepares extemporaneous unit dose medications.
- Verifies the integrity of emergency carts throughout the medical center.
- Communicates with patient-care areas to facilitate expedient medication delivery.
- Demonstrates proficiency in aseptic techniques and basic IV preparation support.
- Performs mathematical calculations for medication volumes and metric measurements.
- Reconciles IV doses and documents discrepancies.
- Transmits drug orders to wholesalers.
- Accurately stocks pharmacy inventory and rotates stock to ensure adequate supply.
- Maintains inventory adherence to contracted products and formulary items.
- Demonstrates knowledge and competency in providing for age-specific needs of the populations served.
- Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards.
- Completes required education assignments annually.
- Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum Education: None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.
- Licensure Requirement: The Tennessee Board of Pharmacy requires newly hired probationary employees to be licensed by the end of their first 90 days of hire and to maintain their Technician License in active status thereafter.
