Responsibilities
- Patient Care:
- Assists the pharmacist in providing medication, drug information, and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
- Fills medication orders from labels in a timely and accurate manner.
- Fills medication carts, drug replacement boxes, and automated dispensing units.
- Delivers medications to patient care areas and picks up items going to the Pharmacy.
- Completes area inspections as assigned in the required time frame and corrects noted deficiencies.
- Processes and prepares sterile drug orders using aseptic technique.
- Prepackages drugs as required and prepares proper paperwork for prepackaging records.
- Completely and accurately inputs medication charges and credits daily.
- Maintains patient medication drawer accuracy by updating, adding, and deleting medications as needed.
- Pulls discharges from the computer and removes medications from patient drawers.
- Participates in training and working with students as requested.
- Participates in inventory control and wholesale orders, placing orders as requested.
- Ensures all work is verified by a Pharmacist.
- Organization/Work Role:
- Prioritizes workload and completes work in a timely manner.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work environment.
- Shares responsibility for ordering and stocking medication and keeping the department clean.
- Maintains a calm demeanor during busy or crisis situations.
- Utilizes personal protective equipment to protect from exposure to chemical, radiation, and infectious hazards.
- Professional:
- Actively participates in department management by providing input at meetings and reading communication.
- Mentors new and less experienced staff and students.
- Uses policy and procedure manuals and other reference material to ensure proper course of action.
- Quality Improvement:
- Identifies, proposes solutions, and assists in the implementation of ideas for improvement in patient care and departmental/hospital operations.
- Participates in the successful implementation of change.
- Identifies opportunities and implements strategies to decrease waste in medication.
- Participates in department quality improvement (QI) as requested.
- Performs other related job tasks or responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Completion of a formal education program which meets requirements for certification.
- Currently enrolled in the College of Pharmacy.
- Licensure/Certifications:
- Licensed as a Pharmacy Intern by the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy.
- Special Skills:
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with occasional periods of above-average pressure.
- Basic computer skills.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Willingness to work in all areas of pharmacy services as assigned.
- Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with team members.
