Perspectives of International Graduate Students on Authentic Leadership Impact on Commitment to Study
About the Research
This action research explores the factors impacting international graduate students’ study engagement, general well-being, and potential areas for improvement in a globalized education landscape. The study examines the perspectives of international graduate students at a private Canadian university on the impact of Authentic Leadership on their commitment to study.
The research question guiding this study is: “What are the perceptions of international graduate students in a private, Canadian university on Authentic Leadership’s impact on their commitment to study?”
Methodology
A qualitative action research approach was used, with data collected via emailed open-ended questionnaires containing eight questions. The sample consisted of six international graduate students (five females and one male) from diverse backgrounds. Data analysis involved identifying common themes from participants’ responses regarding their perceptions of Authentic Leadership.
Key Findings
- Students perceive university instructors as accessible and inclusive, demonstrating empathy and fostering trust.
- Authentic Leadership behaviors (e.g., promoting diversity and inclusion) create a conducive learning environment.
- A sense of belonging enhances students’ commitment to their studies.
Recommendations
- Universities should prioritize professional development programs to cultivate Authentic Leadership qualities among staff.
- Further research could explore Authentic Leadership’s impact in government-funded universities.
