About the Role
Exemplifies and ensures strong customer service in all aspects of the job. Directs and controls the operation of the Front End in the absence of store management to achieve sales and profit objectives. As the primary contact for customers, the Person In Charge (PIC) provides friendly, courteous, and helpful service. During the absence of the Store Manager and Assistant Managers, the PIC assumes charge of the store with authority to make decisions for maximum profit, efficiency, and superior customer service. The PIC supervises store employees and may also act as a Cashier-Checker.
Responsibilities
- Provide customer service as defined by company policy.
- Handle emergencies, customer complaints, employee or customer accidents, and supervise all store personnel.
- Maintain familiarity with company policies and procedures.
- Supervise the sales floor to monitor service and product replenishment.
- Replace stock in displays surrounding the checkout area.
- Assist in maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
- Help other cashiers with computer, register, and scanner issues.
- Perform basic office functions to assist customers and personnel.
- Operate a cash register to total customers’ bills, receive payments, and provide correct change.
- Bag groceries in paper, canvas, or plastic bags and assist with carry-out.
- Complete close-of-day functions in the office when required.
- Count out-of-stock products and tills when other cashier-checkers leave.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to follow company customer service procedures.
- Demonstrated prior customer service skills or related experience.
- Ability to interact with customers and co-workers.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Knowledge of all positions within the store.
- Ability to work independently.
- Desired: Prior experience as a clerk or manager.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises all store employees during the absence of the Store Director or Assistant Store Director.
Work Environment
- 100% inside work; rare outdoor exposure.
- Seldom exposure to chemicals (mild detergents or glass cleaner).
- Tools and equipment used: six-wheeled cart, grocery cart, box cutter, pens and pencils, spray bottle, rags, mops, broom, telephone/intercom, cash register, credit card scanner, computer, pallet jack, bailer.

- Upper Extremity: Constant handling/grasping and repetitive motion; frequent fine finger manipulation.
- Vision: Uses peripheral vision and depth perception; near vision for operating scanners, making change, and troubleshooting equipment.
- Hearing: Required to converse with customers, provide service, and receive questions from employees and customers; answer pages and telephone.
- Speech: Required to respond to customers and employees and use intercom/telephone.
This is a safety-sensitive position with responsibilities that could affect the safety or health of the employee or others.
Pay
The pay range is $17.38 to $18.88 per hour, but no less than the local minimum wage. Starting rates vary based on location, experience, qualifications, and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
