Permit Technician- Planning and Development (Civil Service)

Essential Functions

  • Inputs, tracks, and process permits; maintains thorough documentation for associated permits and certificates of occupancies.
  • Answers general questions and provides guidance related to processes and services including how to apply for permits, submittal requirements, code interpretations, and other procedures to citizens, developers, contractors, and builders.
  • Researches and utilizes applicable standards within the International Codes to assist customers with their development questions.
  • Provides general technical support to the Building Official, the Deputy Building Official, and the Building Inspection staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of codes, ordinances, rules, and regulations related to commercial and residential building construction.
  • Skills in building and maintaining an accurate database for GIS, with the ability to pay close, accurate attention to details.
  • Ability to read plot plans and site plans of residential and commercial projects and the ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer, scanner, printer, general office equipment or other equipment as necessary to complete essential function.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including, but not limited to seeing, sorting, sitting, lifting, hammering, calculating, typing, and writing.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with planning staff and to coordinate a wide variety of tasks with the public interaction.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of heavy customer service experience AND/OR experience performing residential/commercial inspections or plans examination.
  • Equivalency: Associate degree in any field plus one (1) year of the stated experience will meet the education and experience requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a business, public administration, construction, or related field will meet the education and experience requirements.
  • Current International Code Council (ICC) Permit Tech Certification will meet the education and experience requirements.

The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
