Per Diem Overnight Residential Nurse (RN/LPN)

About the role

At Guiding Eyes for the Blind, we breed, raise, and train exceptional guide dogs and match them with individuals seeking greater independence. Our campus in Yorktown Heights, NY provides on‑campus housing for visually impaired students (age 16 and older) during their two‑week guide dog training program. As a Per Diem Overnight Residential Nurse, you will help ensure the well‑being of these students by providing a safe, supportive environment and contributing to a positive residential experience throughout their stay.

Responsibilities

• Provide overnight medical care and support for students in the residential program.
• Respond to safety concerns, medical issues, and emergencies.
• Assist students in managing chronic health conditions and mobility‑related concerns.
• Ensure students self‑administer prescribed medications and adhere to any dietary or allergy restrictions.
• Maintain accurate medical records and documentation per company policy.
• Complete brief shift reports and communicate effectively with the nursing team and daytime staff.
• Help maintain a safe, supportive, and respectful residential environment while promoting student independence.
• Provide assistance with general student needs as appropriate.
• Promote and supervise evening activities; maintain an active and accessible presence for students.
• Explain guide dog positioning and behavior to students as needed.
• Assess the need for emergency veterinary care and follow established protocols (training provided).
• Assist students and their guide dogs in navigating the campus safely.
• Provide support with basic dog‑care activities, including supervision in the relief area.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Active New York State Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license.
• Experience in a healthcare setting, preferably residential, rehabilitation, disability support, or similar environments.
• Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
• Ability to accurately assess situations and make sound decisions independently.
• Strong critical‑thinking and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and effectively manage overnight responsibilities.
• Warm, compassionate approach with the ability to build rapport while maintaining professional boundaries.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, integrity, and punctuality.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; Salesforce experience a plus.
• Comfortable working around large, active dogs.
• Valid driver's license.
