PennDOT CDL Operator Trainee (Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee)

Begin an exciting professional journey as a PennDOT CDL Operator Trainee with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. This role allows you to acquire the skills necessary to operate heavy equipment while supporting highway and bridge maintenance crews. You will gain practical experience, develop new skills, and work outdoors as part of a dedicated team.

Responsibilities

• Equipment Training: Train to operate heavy trucks, loaders, and other maintenance equipment
• Tool Use: Perform manual labor using tools such as shovels, rakes, chain saws, compressors and mowers
• Safety Practices: Follow safety procedures, use protective equipment, and stay aware of work area hazards
• Operational Checks: Complete pre- and post-operation inspections and make basic field adjustments
• Environmental Compliance: Apply environmental protection practices during maintenance activities
• Accident Reporting: Report injuries, near-misses, and equipment accidents promptly

Qualifications

Special Requirements:

• Possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
• All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit on the first day of work.
• All positions require employees to possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations by the first day of work.

Work Schedule

Full-time employment. Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Telework is not available for this position.
