Peer Mentor

Staten Island, NY – United Activities Unlimited, Inc. (UAU) is a community-based agency that provides a wide range of services—including job placement, youth development programs, and community outreach—to inspire, transform, and empower individuals of all ages. About the role

The Peer Mentor for the Fatherhood Matters Initiative will be a key member of the team supporting low-income fathers and helping them become self-sufficient and more connected with their children and community, strengthening their children’s economic, emotional, and social futures.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and report tracking of participants’ overall progress and attendance, including proper documentation as required.
• Facilitate parenting-skills training for Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, and Tier 4 members of the UAU Fatherhood Initiative.
• Help facilitate and implement a variety of workshops for participants.
• Attend and participate in weekly support groups with participants and provide informal mentoring.
• Facilitate and organize community projects in conjunction with program participants.
• Conduct outreach and recruitment activities for UAU’s Fatherhood Initiative, including street outreach in targeted neighborhoods and at community events.
• Update department files and records accordingly.
• Abide by all safety protocols and policies and procedures as outlined by UAU and DYCD.
• Attend all required meetings with UAU Fatherhood Initiative leadership.
• Demonstrate positive leadership and act as a positive role model to participants and colleagues.
• Participate in ongoing professional development as directed by the Program Director.
• Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned.

Requirements

• 18 years or older at time of hire.
• Valid GED or High School diploma.
• Reliable mode of transportation.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to conduct and complete work independently.
• Willingness to take initiative and be flexible when needed.
• Ability to work collaboratively to achieve target objectives and outcomes.
• Strong understanding of and respect for individuals’ different capacities, cultures, and abilities.
• High level of emotional intelligence and ability to assess and respond to individual needs thoughtfully and accurately.
• Respect for diverse racial, socio-economic, ethnic, academic, religious, and cultural backgrounds and identities.
• Demonstrated history of being an effective mentor with excellent interpersonal skills.

Qualifications

• Preferred: experience relatable as a father or parent/guardian who has either been disconnected from and/or had supervised visitation with a child.
• Preferred: minimum of one year of relative work-related experience of proven effective team leadership.

Physical Requirements

• Occasionally required to stand, sit, or walk.
• Standard office environment; involves sitting approximately 50 percent of the day, walking or standing the remainder.
• Must be able to remain in a stationary position for at least 50 percent of the time.
• May include working prolonged periods at a desk and on a computer.
• Must be able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand and exchange accurate information.
• Must be able to observe details at close range.
• May include travel to a variety of locations, based on programming needs (reimbursed in accordance with UAU’s fiscal policies).

Pay

$18 to $20 per hour (based on city, state, and/or federal contractual obligations and budgetary allowances).

Schedule

20–30 hours per week, in person, on Staten Island, NY.
