Pediatrician - Health Equity for Adolescents in the Legal System (HEAL)

About the Role

PAGNY has an opportunity for a full-time Pediatrician in the Health Equity for Adolescents in the Legal System (HEAL) program, a new NYC Health + Hospitals initiative to become the primary provider of medical services to young people in City custody. The role is based at the Administration for Children's Services (ACS), with PAGNY staffing several municipal hospitals and clinics in New York City through an affiliation agreement with NYC Health + Hospitals.

The HEAL Program provides 24/7 medical care across two secure detention sites, two school-based health centers, and limited pharmacy services at seven non-secure sites (group homes). Services include comprehensive medical screenings, dental screenings and procedures, vaccinations, routine testing, responses to immediate needs, and referrals for offsite care within and outside the NYC Health + Hospitals system.

Schedule

40 hours per week, including day, overnight, and weekend shifts.

Responsibilities

• Provide medical care to ACS adolescents, prioritizing safety and security measures.
• Take relevant patient history, identify patient needs, and make diagnoses.
• Develop and implement treatment plans using diagnostic data.
• Perform complete well-care examinations, including physical examinations.
• Perform complete gynecological histories and physical examinations.
• Write prescriptions, inform patients about medications, and obtain parent/guardian consents when needed.
• Complete medical forms and documentation related to patient care.
• Make and track all referrals to other agencies and providers, ensuring follow-up care.
• Assist with phlebotomy as needed to ensure smooth patient flow.
• Administer immunizations as required.
• Distribute, refill, discard, and discontinue medication for patients.
• Complete Court Orders and all other ACS-mandated paperwork.
• Evaluate and treat ACS employees on an emergent basis only.
• Provide health education on preventive medicine, chronic diseases, parenting, prenatal care, nutrition, family planning, medication usage, and stress management.

Administrative Duties

• Participate in patient outreach.
• Participate in case conferences to discuss patient care.
• Assist the Medical Director in developing and implementing medical protocols and forms.
• Initiate and participate in research related to healthcare or allied fields, in collaboration with the Medical Director.
