About the role

The Pediatric Surgery Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) provides comprehensive, high-quality care to pediatric surgical patients across the continuum of care. Working collaboratively with pediatric surgeons, physicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary teams, the APP is responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of infants, children, and adolescents requiring surgical intervention. This role includes inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, perioperative management, consultation services, and participation in the ongoing care of pediatric surgery patients.

Responsibilities

  • Provides advanced clinical assessment, evaluation, and management of pediatric surgery patients in accordance with established protocols, standards of practice, and state regulations
  • Performs comprehensive histories and physical examinations
  • Develops and implements treatment plans
  • Documents all patient care activities accurately and timely within the electronic medical record

Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • Current certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in pediatric or other ambulatory care setting
  • Knowledge of general nursing principles and practice skills
  • Knowledge of organizational functions, policies and regulations
  • Knowledge of current trends and new developments
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of nursing, applicable to those areas requiring special education

Licenses and certifications

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Tennessee
  • Licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in the state of Tennessee
  • National certification in a specialty (such as ACNP, ANP, CCNS, FNP)
  • Certificate of fitness from the state of Tennessee (as required by specialty)
  • BLS completed prior to going to the unit/department and maintained going forward
  • Tennessee licensure or multistate licensure from a compact state must be obtained within three months of hire for non-Tennessee residents

Additional details

A nurse practitioner is employed by Erlanger Medical Center and is responsible for participating in the diagnosis, treatment and supportive care of patients. The employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her clinic. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective to the patient's status. Interpretation of the appropriate information is needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the Nurse Practitioner's protocols.
