Mission or goal of unit
The mission of the Pediatric Surgery Division of the Department of Surgery is the advancement of science through research and the training of undergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. The Department fosters a level of research and professional activity essential to the graduate and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Division provides junior faculty with clinical and research experiences that prepare them for their professional careers. The Division is committed to its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.
Chief purpose of this position
This position is an open rank, collateral, non-tenure track faculty position in the area of Pediatric Surgery. The faculty member will also support the general surgical practice of the Division. The faculty member will also support the Division with teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Duties & Responsibilities
Teaching: Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in all areas of Pediatric Surgery.
Research: This position will require the establishment of a successful research program in partnership with other disciplines which will lead to independent funding as an investigator.
Clinical: Faculty will establish a successful clinical practice in the field of general pediatric surgery. Clinical responsibilities may also involve shared time between VCU and affiliated community hospitals.
Other (for instance administrative duties, etc.): Faculty member will serve on departmental, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be Board Certified/Board Eligible in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery
ACGME approved Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery
Ability to work in a complex matrixed environment with high emotional intelligence
Commitment to teaching and practice in an academic setting
Commitment to work in an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
Board eligibility or Certification in pediatric critical care
About the Unit
The Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Pediatrics is dedicated to providing comprehensive, compassionate, state-of-the-art pediatric health care, research and education at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, a full-service children’s hospital within the VCU Medical Center. CHoR offers a robust continuum of pediatric services, research and education, and is the region’s only full-service children’s hospital. CHoR provides emergency, primary, secondary, advanced, tertiary and long-term care. CHoR has 11 locations across Central Virginia and provides more than 42 pediatric medical/surgical services.
About the Organization
Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU recently opened a multi-story, high-tech ambulatory pavilion for pediatric services. The new facility will meet the growing need for outpatient services for children in our community.
The new pavilion includes diagnostic and treatment services for children, bringing together the majority of outpatient pediatric services currently on the MCV campus to one location. It is designed to meet the unique health care needs of children, and to provide Richmond the most advanced and coordinated care possible:
The facility is a 640,000 square foot, multi-story building and includes a 7-story parking deck with more than 600 spaces.
The new pavilion houses 72 exam rooms arranged in clinic pods to optimize a multidisciplinary care model. Each pod includes 12 exam rooms, a treatment room, support space and a centralized clinical team.
The new pavilion features pediatric-dedicated imaging, surgical and endoscopy procedure rooms, as well as pediatric faculty offices.
The pavilion is designed with future expansion in mind. It can accommodate additional clinic pods and operating rooms, as demand for these services increases.
When we break ground on a new facility, it’s about more than bricks and mortar. It’s just like we tell our children— it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Over the past three years, Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU has increased pediatric faculty to more than 130 clinicians focused on 42 specialty areas and providing access to children’s health care from more than 11 locations throughout the region. It’s these dedicated physicians and an extensive network of pediatric-trained nurses, child-life specialists, therapists, social workers and ancillary medical staff, who will continue providing health care designed especially for children.
