PD Cytogenetic Technologist- Cytogenetics- Variable Shift

About the role

Under the general supervision of the Clinical Manager, incumbents will independently perform a wide variety of technical procedures in Clinical Cytogenetics and Genomics section of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Perform chromosome preparation, various banding methods and cell culture for all cell types. Handle potentially biohazardous specimens using aseptic technique and universal precautions. Perform chromosome and FISH analysis by microscopy for aberrations including proper use of computer-assisted imaging system. Other responsibilities include troubleshooting, review/oversee instrument function and utilization, quality control and quality assurance procedures, proficiency testing oversight and participation in lab accreditation process, and method development-modification-parallel testing. On a daily basis, incumbents will assess overall workload for any area that needs help.

Responsibilities

  • Perform chromosome preparation, various banding methods and cell culture for all cell types.
  • Handle potentially biohazardous specimens using aseptic technique and universal precautions.
  • Perform chromosome and FISH analysis by microscopy for aberrations including proper use of computer-assisted imaging system.
  • Other responsibilities include troubleshooting, review/oversee instrument function and utilization, quality control and quality assurance procedures, proficiency testing oversight and participation in lab accreditation process, and method development-modification-parallel testing.
  • Absorb workload and assist where needed.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of all relevant sub-specialty area industry, health and safety, federal, and state regulations.
  • Mathematical calculations to include: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers, fractions, and decimals with and without a calculator to derive results.
  • Customer service skills appropriate to the job.
  • Willingness to testify in court regarding testing activities if subpoenaed.
  • Ability to differentiate variations in color.
  • Interpersonal skills to independently convey information with authority, handle highly sensitive matters and interact with high level contacts from other organizations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory concepts, new methodologies and advances in the field of specimen processing, automation, and procedures.
  • Current California state Cytogenetics CLS License.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 3 years of laboratory experience in both karyotype and FISH study of cancer samples.
  • Ability to use laboratory's application programs.
  • Ability to perform data checks using queries, visual review and other appropriate means to verify data accuracy.
  • Ability to respond clearly, concisely, and cooperatively to questions from other technologists, unlicensed staff, or supervisory staff regarding how procedures/duties were or should be performed, validity of test results, etc.
  • Ability to organize assignments and laboratory operations in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Highly developed personal organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance methods and ability to apply principles to design quality systems.
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
  • Ability to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System.
  • Ability to establish & maintain effective working relationships across the Health System.
