About the role
Under the general supervision of the Clinical Manager, incumbents will independently perform a wide variety of technical procedures in Clinical Cytogenetics and Genomics section of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Other responsibilities include method development-modification-parallel testing, repair of laboratory instruments, sample processing, reagent preparation, data entry.
Responsibilities
- Assess overall workload for any area that needs help.
- Process specimens, perform waived and non-waived testing without direct and constant supervision, and report results without supervisor or director review for the tests that are within their scope of licensure and for which they have been trained and deemed competent.
Requirements
- Thorough knowledge of all relevant sub-specialty area industry, health and safety, federal, and state regulations.
- Mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
- Customer service skills appropriate to the job.
- Ability to differentiate variations in color.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of quality assurance methods and ability to apply principles to design quality systems.
- Ability to organize assignments and laboratory operations in an efficient and effective manner.
- Highly developed personal organizational skills.
- Ability to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies.
- Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System.
Qualifications
- Current California state Cytogenetics CLS License.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 3 years of laboratory experience in both karyotype and FISH study of cancer samples.
- Ability to use laboratory's application programs.
- Ability to perform data checks using queries, visual review and other appropriate means to verify data accuracy.
- Ability to respond clearly, concisely, and cooperatively to questions from other technologists, unlicensed staff, or supervisory staff regarding how procedures/duties were or should be performed, validity of test results, etc.
- Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms.
- Knowledge of Clinical Laboratory, medical center, HR and UC policies and processes.
