About the Role
The Surgical Services Department at Sentara Obici Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician / Administrative Associate. This full-time position involves rotating 8-hour shifts and is predominantly a Patient Care Technician role, with the addition of floating to cover the Administrative Associate as needed.
The Patient Care Technician provides patient care, supports independent and dependent activities of daily living, and performs tasks such as vital signs, mobility and ambulation, phlebotomy, point-of-care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and foley catheter insertion and removal. Compliance with patient safety practices is required under the direction of the professional RN nurse.
You will observe patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions, document findings in a timely and accurate manner, and report any changes to the nurse or medical staff.
Responsibilities
- Provide patient care and support for activities of daily living
- Perform vital signs, mobility and ambulation assistance
- Conduct phlebotomy, point-of-care testing, and EKG testing
- Remove peripheral IVs and collect specimens
- Insert and remove foley catheters
- Comply with patient safety practices under RN supervision
- Observe and document patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions
- Report changes in patient condition to nursing or medical staff
- Float to cover Administrative Associate duties as needed
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required
- One of the following education or experience criteria must be met:
- Graduate of Sentara Care Partner Certification Program
- Successful completion of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program
- National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA)
- National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT)
- Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School
- Emergency Services certification (EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic)
- Current student enrolled in a clinical program (RN, LPN, RT, or PT) with at least one semester completed
- Current work experience within the last three years as a PCT or Nursing Assistant
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire
- For those acting as Safety Partners: de-escalation and physical intervention training within 30 days of hire (15 days for Behavioral Health roles)
- Strong Microsoft Office computer skills are strongly preferred
