Payroll Tax Specialist
About the role
HCM Tax Team members handle the back-end processing of payrolls on the iSolved platform. Working within a daily processing environment, the Tax Team is responsible for supporting tax payments, tax form filings, and related payroll tax activities. Team members are expected to develop and maintain knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax requirements and provide high-quality support to clients and internal team members.
Responsibilities
- Prepare Tax ID applications for federal, state, and local tax agencies.
- Create and review Power of Attorney (POA) documents.
- Contact clients to assist with agency access and approvals.
- Communicate with federal, state, and local agencies to obtain guidance and resolve account-related issues.
- Research and respond to client payroll tax questions.
- Maintain accurate customer files, communication logs, and supporting documentation.
- Conduct all customer interactions with a high degree of professionalism and in alignment with Wipfli's culture and values.
- Partner with team members to support payroll tax compliance and processing activities.
- Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Human Resources, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Basic knowledge of payroll, accounting, tax, or compliance principles.
- General understanding of business entity structures and tax classifications, including corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies (LLCs), and sole proprietorships.
- Ability to understand how business structure impacts payroll tax registration and compliance requirements.
- Experience in a customer service, client support, administrative, payroll, accounting, or related role.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting payroll operations or payroll tax administration.
- Familiarity with federal, state, and local payroll tax requirements.
- Experience with payroll, HCM, or accounting software solutions.
- Experience working with tax registrations, agency correspondence, or account maintenance.
- Call center or client service experience.
- Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP).

Pay
The estimated base pay range for this role is $21 - $28 per hour, with offers typically not made at the maximum. The actual salary at the time of offer depends on business-related factors like location, skills, experience, training/education, licensure, certifications, business needs, current associate pay, and relevant employment laws. Individuals may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, subject to participation rules and based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual and firm performance.
