Payroll Supervisor
About the role
As our Payroll Supervisor, you'll oversee day-to-day payroll operations and lead the payroll team to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing for more than 22,000 team members nationwide. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll provide guidance and support to the payroll team while maintaining strong payroll controls, overseeing payroll tax activities, reconciliations, and reporting, and serving as a key escalation point for complex payroll matters. You'll partner across the organization to help deliver consistent, accurate, and effective payroll support.
Responsibilities
- Oversee bi-weekly payroll operations for more than 22,000 exempt and non-exempt team members across multiple states and jurisdictions
- Provide hands-on payroll support and review to ensure accurate and timely processing
- Lead, develop, and prioritize the work of payroll staff
- Provide coaching, training, cross-training, and ongoing feedback to support strong payroll coverage, accountability, accuracy, and service
- Interpret and apply Company policies and federal, state, and local payroll requirements
- Maintain payroll-related Sarbanes-Oxley controls to support compliance, accurate processing, and mitigation of payroll risk
- Oversee bi-weekly payroll reconciliations and monthly payroll reporting
- Research discrepancies, resolve issues, and perform analysis to ensure accurate payroll results and reporting
- Coordinate quarterly and year-end payroll tax activities, including tax reconciliations and filings
- Oversee federal, state, and local tax requirements, W-2 preparation and reconciliation, bonuses, third-party sick pay, taxable fringe benefits, and other required payroll reporting
- Oversee payroll-related unclaimed property activities and annual Workers' Compensation reporting
- Support payroll audits and regulatory reporting to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance
- Serve as a primary escalation point for complex payroll matters
- Partner with Finance, Human Resources, Operations, HCM/HRIS, IT, payroll vendors, and government agencies to research and resolve payroll-related issues
- Maintain payroll procedures, documentation, and workflows
- Identify and recommend improvements that strengthen payroll accuracy, efficiency, controls, team effectiveness, and service
Qualifications
- 5+ years of progressive payroll experience, including multi-state payroll processing
- 2+ years of experience leading or supervising payroll staff
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll taxation, wage and hour requirements, and payroll compliance
- Experience with quarterly and year-end payroll tax reconciliations, filings, and reporting
- Experience supporting high-volume payroll processing, reconciliations, payroll controls, tax reporting, and year-end activities
- Demonstrated ability to coach and develop payroll staff while building accountability and a collaborative, productive team environment
- Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail
- Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and deadlines in a fast-paced payroll environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with team members and leaders at all levels
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
- Experience in a public company and/or Sarbanes-Oxley controlled environment preferred
- Workday Payroll and ADP SmartCompliance experience preferred
Pay
USD $90,000 - $100,000 plus bonus eligibility and comprehensive benefits. Final salary within the range will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, relevant experience, and other job-related qualifications.
