Payroll Operations Technician
Reporting to the Payroll Operations Supervisor, this position provides entry-level technical service and support in one or more functional areas of payroll and human resource management. The role works cross-functionally within the department to support the payroll process through established policies and procedures and stays informed on all payroll projects and updates as directed by the Payroll Manager or Supervisor and the Department of Accounts.
Responsibilities
- Retrieve and manipulate data via online access in database files through various software applications.
- Organize and manage workflow to ensure payroll tasks are processed accurately and timely.
- Handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment with multiple customers and priorities.
- Communicate effectively with a wide range of constituencies using strong verbal, written, and customer service skills.
- Apply analytical and critical thinking to support payroll and HR processes.
- Remain optimistic and supportive of established procedures while identifying opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies.
Requirements
- Basic math skills and professional phone/email etiquette.
- Proficiency with computer systems, HRIS systems, and Microsoft Office programs (especially Excel).
- Basic understanding of payroll and human resource principles.
- Ability to handle multiple administrative tasks simultaneously.
- Experience handling and reporting large volumes of data with accuracy.
- Strong attention to detail, numerical aptitude, and proofreading/editing skills.
- Flexibility to work varied hours as needed.
Qualifications
- Previous customer service experience.
- Functional knowledge of Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS).
- Experience with MS Office, particularly Excel.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with Peoplesoft/Oracle systems.
- Experience with financial and/or payroll reconciliation processes.
- Knowledge of process improvement techniques.
- Adobe Acrobat Pro skills.
- Shared services or call center experience.
- Experience in higher education and/or state government.
