About the Opportunity
The Payroll Delivery Manager I leads a team of Payroll Specialists supporting a portfolio of clients. This role is pivotal in ensuring the accurate and timely delivery of payroll services, maintaining operational quality, and driving process improvements. The position requires managing client relationships, overseeing payroll operations, and providing expert guidance on U.S. and Canadian payroll processes. The role contributes directly to client satisfaction and operational performance through effective leadership and collaboration.
Responsibilities
- Lead and optimize daily, high-volume multi-client payroll operations within fast-paced, evolving SaaS and managed services environments
- Oversee internal departmental activities, resolve systemic operational roadblocks, and handle complex client escalations promptly
- Implement rigorous quality control frameworks and comprehensive data audits to continuously improve processing accuracy and minimize errors
- Monitor team adherence to strict client contracts, master service agreements (MSAs), and critical service level agreements (SLAs)
- Identify operational deficiencies and design standardized process improvement initiatives to streamline localized workflows
- Serve as the primary subject matter expert on core platform payroll solutions, compliance metrics, and proprietary client data architecture
- Track active engineering and processing workflows, prioritize critical tasks, and proactively clear technical or administrative bottlenecks
- Analyze team capacity and recommend strategic resource allocations to maintain maximum operational efficiency
- Support stakeholders through various phases of the client lifecycle, custom onboarding pipelines, and net-new project implementations
- Cook up user acceptance testing (UAT) and establish operational readiness blueprints ahead of structural platform upgrades or client go-lives
- Coach, mentor, and foster professional development for a team of dedicated Payroll Specialists
- Develop, document, and publish localized operational standards, unified best practices, and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Prepare, analyze, and present key performance indicator (KPI) dashboards, operational metrics, and executive business updates
- Build, fortify, and maintain deeply consultative partnerships with client contacts and cross-functional corporate partners
- Champion an unyielding commitment to premium customer service, prompt response times, and positive client retention
- Promote cross-functional collaboration across Product, Engineering, Tax, and Account Management divisions
- Apply granular, localized payroll expertise to navigate complex, multi-jurisdictional tax settings and localized gross-to-net calculations
- Communicate sophisticated technical payroll and compliance data clearly and concisely to both internal teams and external client stakeholders
- Demonstrate absolute ownership and personal accountability for the precision of all client facing deliverables
- Review and officially sign off on multi-state and international payroll entries, ensuring complete regulatory alignment
- Support continuous, year-round compliance tracking and internal control reviews (such as SOC 1/SOC 2 requirements)
- Execute, manage, and coordinate comprehensive payroll, banking, and tax balance audits
- Lead the end-to-end orchestration of high-stakes quarter-end balancing and year-end tax processing (including W-2, W-2c, T4, and RL-1 distribution)
Requirements
- Two (2) to four (4) years of progressive, hands-on experience navigating high-volume corporate payroll operations, with deep functional knowledge of U.S. multi-state and/or Canadian provincial payroll processing
- Strong analytical, technical, and mathematical payroll aptitude, including an understanding of automated tax structures, wage garnishments, and benefits deductions
- Exceptional organizational, strategic planning, and problem-solving skills with a high level of situational adaptability
- Elite verbal and written communication skills tailored for executive briefings and sensitive client communications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Human Resources, or a closely related discipline (or equivalent practical field experience)
- Strong professional work ethic, a resilient mindset, and a consistently positive, solutions-oriented attitude
- Demonstrated ability to perform accurately under tight processing deadlines and manage structural changes fluidly
- Open flexibility for occasional domestic or regional travel as needed for corporate meetings or client workshops
- Availability to support fluid shift arrangements covering standard operational business hours between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, including flexibility for occasional weekends and holiday peak seasons
- Preferred Qualifications: Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) designation from the American Payroll Association (APA), or a National Payroll Institute (NPI) certification for Canada (PCP/CPM)
- Prior experience utilizing enterprise-grade cloud HCM or automated workforce management architectures
Pay Range and Compensation Package
The target baseline compensation will be determined dynamically during the interview pipeline based on the candidate's core regional marketplace location, specific depth of multi-country payroll expertise, technical certifications, and historical leadership achievements. A comprehensive compensation summary, potential performance bonuses, and transparent salary figures will be shared openly by the hiring manager during the initial screening call.
