Paving / Milling Technician

Responsibilities

• Perform heavy physical duties involving a variety of semi-skilled or skilled tasks related to asphalt milling and paving, with duties varying by crew assignment.
• Specialize within a crew in roles such as Screed Person, Lute Person, QC Tech, Side Person (mill), Tack Truck Driver, Water Truck Driver, or Utility Adjustment Person.
• Handle shoveling, raking, luting, jack hammering, heavy lifting, and the use of multiple small tools.
• Clean tools, materials, and work areas.
• Perform manual tasks requiring fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination.
• Work safely and prioritize individual and crew safety; communicate clearly with crew members to ensure safety, teamwork, and completion of daily goals.
• Depending on crew specialty, perform tasks such as using hand and power tools, conducting grade checks, directing equipment operations, and managing cuts and fills.
• Comply with all company policies, especially safety protocols ("Home Safe Tonight" and "AIPS").
• Overnight stays may be required; night and weekend shifts are common during the milling and paving season.

Physical Demands

• Engage in extensive and heavy physical activity requiring dexterity and fine motor skills.
• Carry very heavy loads of materials, sometimes up to 75 pounds.
• Work in all weather conditions.
• Stand, walk, reach, kneel, climb, or balance for extended periods.
• Require close, color, and peripheral vision.

Work Environment

• Prioritize the safety of self and fellow workers.
• Work conditions vary by site and are affected by weather.
• Navigate rough graded and undeveloped job sites where carelessness or poor judgment could result in serious or fatal injury.
• Occasionally work in tight confined spaces such as manholes and inlets.
• Work around heavy equipment, loud noises, and vibrations from equipment and power tools.
• Work adjacent to live traffic on most days.

Qualifications

• GED or high school diploma is a plus.
• Trade school experience is a plus.
• PennDOT Paving QC Technical experience is a plus.
• TopCon or similar grade control experience is a plus.
• CDL (A, B, Tanker, Hazmat) is a plus.
• Tack Truck experience is a plus.
• Minimum of 2 years of related work experience required.
• Active, valid driver’s license required.
• Good Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) required.
