Job Description Summary

Aid a Registered Nurse in providing direct patient care to multiple patients on a designated nursing unit.

Responsibilities And Duties

  • Perform and/or assist patients with activities of daily living such as bathing, grooming, eating, walking, etc.
  • Maintain environmental cleanliness and safety of patient rooms, unit, and equipment.
  • Provide assistance to patients, visitors, and nursing personnel in assigned unit and maintain flexibility to help other departments with patient care as needed.
  • Develop respectful and compassionate relationships with patients and families.
  • Serve as a patient safety champion, encouraging safety guidelines among all care providers.
  • Assist in telemetry cardiac monitoring, recognizing life-threatening arrhythmias, and communicate immediately to available licensed clinicians.
  • Act as a transporter for the nursing unit assigned.
  • Run errands for patient care, either picking up or delivering items.

Additional Nursing Tasks

  • Delegable nursing tasks delegated by the Registered Nurse, including tasks that can be performed without requiring judgment.
  • Perform basic nursing care duties as directed by the RN, such as: waived testing (fingerstick glucose, urine dipstick, occult fecal L), non-sterile specimen collection, nasogastric tube care, 1 2 lead EKG, and simple clean non-sterile dressing changes.
  • Accurately collect and record data such as height, weight, vital signs, intake and output, etc., on the appropriate documentation form.
  • Use portable technology, handheld wireless devices for measurement and documentation of intake and output, vital signs, and point-of-care testing.
  • Report patient observations and concerns to the Registered Nurse.

Supporting Roles

  • Assist hospital visitors and staff with information needs.
  • Utilize wireless devices and technology for coordination of healthcare, such as scheduling, flowchart documentation, and nutrition service ordering.
  • Serve as a super user for nursing assistant information technology and/or preceptor for new nursing assistants.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment necessary for patient care operations.
  • Secure and handle appropriate supplies, medications, and lab specimens transported from/into and within the unit.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School or GED equivalent.
  • Individuals aged 16-17 without a high school diploma or GED must have a valid work permit.
  • Individuals aged 18 enrolled in high school do not need a high school diploma/GED/work permit to be considered.
