Qualifications and requirements
- A High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Current Montana CNA certification with current listing on the Montana Board of Nursing Nurse Aide Registry
- Current American Heart Association BLS certificate or obtained within 90 days after hire date
- Calm, confident manner and able to remain calm during moments of escalation or high stress
- Maintain composure with distressed or combative patient(s)
- Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision
- Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
Responsibilities
- Provides direct patient observation and input in planning care through communication with the RN and other patient care team members
- Maintains competency and possesses the skills to provide a safe environment to those medical patients requiring close supervision because of behavioral health issues
- Completes duties as assigned and performs duties under the direct supervision of the RN
- Reports to: Director of Emergency Department
- Observes the patient and maintains a safe environment; must always have continuous and unobstructed view of the patient
- Maintains the standard of care for assigned patients through communication with the care team
- May not adjust or remove restraints
- Notifies the nurse immediately if the patient complains of discomfort
- Accompanies the patient for any test or procedures off the unit
- Accompanies surgical patients to the Holding Area
- Remains within arm's length of the patient until relieved by the RN
- Avoids assisting the patient with pulling out lines/tubes, getting out of bed, or ambulation unless specifically approved by the RN
- May assist with reading to the patient, playing games, turning on the television, and engaging in general conversation
- Assists with obtaining fluids, consuming meals, wiping the patient's face, etc.
- Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff
- Assists with keeping patient rooms and common areas stocked, clean, and orderly
