Patient Safety Specialist - FT - Days

About the Role

The Patient Safety Specialist (PSS) plans, organizes, and facilitates programs to ensure clinical departments follow the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) and the organization's patient safety program. The role involves collecting data through chart reviews and other methods, collaborating with healthcare teams to identify opportunities for improving patient safety, clinical outcomes, and reducing practice variation.

Responsibilities

• Assists with identifying strategies to create and reinforce a culture of safety and continuous preparedness for NPSGs.
• Collects clinical data and conducts chart reviews using hospital medical records and information systems.
• Supports a culture of patient safety by communicating with nursing, administration, and medical staff leadership to ensure organizational compliance with regulations and policies.
• Drives patient safety improvements by identifying trends, analyzing performance data, and recommending opportunities to enhance clinical outcomes.
• Communicates patient safety actions and recommendations to committees, department directors, and employees.
• Coordinates ongoing patient safety orientation, activities, and continuing education programs for staff.
• Leads projects impacting patient safety and supporting organizational strategic goals using process improvement concepts and procedures.
• Leads investigations for serious safety events using FMEA and/or Root Cause Analysis methodologies; develops action plans and ensures implementation of improvements.
• Prepares an annual report of error occurrences and actions taken to improve patient safety.
• Manages error/event reporting through a non-punitive error reporting system.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program required; BSN preferred.
• Valid RN License from Virginia in good standing or current multistate licensure privilege as an RN required.
• Minimum of three years of clinical experience required.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

• Physical: Constant (67-100% of workday) sitting and use of arms and hands; occasional (0-33% of workday) standing, walking, bending, squatting; ability to lift, push, and pull up to 10 lbs.
• Mental: Critical thinking and analytical skills; ability to multi-task and communicate effectively; collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team.
• Environmental: Potential risk of exposure to chemicals.

Pay

Compensation pay range: $37.56 - $56.34 per hour.
