About the role
The Patient Safety Officer – Nursing Float Pool is responsible for the continuous improvement of total quality care as it relates to providing Patient Observation Companion / Sitter services to patients. This includes providing close and/or continuous observation of adult and geriatric patients who may be at risk for adverse events such as falls, self-injury or harm to others. Additionally, the role involves performing safety rounds on designated units and monitoring cameras on the Psychiatry unit.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct observation of patients as directed by the nursing plan of care and under the supervision of the charge nurse and/or nursing manager.
- Aid nursing and security staff in creating, maintaining, and providing a safe environment.
- Report on changes in the condition of patients to the appropriate charge nurse and other staff members.
- Maintain constant monitoring of patient status, anticipate and intervene as necessary, and obtain immediate assistance when needed to ensure a safe and protective environment.
- Perform safety rounds on assigned units.
- Assist nursing staff in emergency situations.
- Maintain confidentiality consistent with HIPAA and Illinois Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Code.
- Work as a team member to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
Requirements
- High school education or equivalent required.
- Ability to achieve Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for HealthCare Workers or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification for HealthCare workers during the orientation period.
- Educated on and compliant with certification requirements for CPI during the orientation period.
- Complies with Infection Control, Standard Precautions, and OSHA standards for healthcare professionals.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment (e.g., face mask, goggles, latex/non-latex gloves) as needed.
- Able to work effectively within role independently and with other team members.
- Able to organize and complete work in a timely manner.
- Able to read, write, and effectively communicate in English.
- Able to understand medical terminology.
Qualifications
- High school education or equivalent required.
- CPR for HealthCare Workers or BCLS certification for HealthCare workers during the orientation period.
- CPI certification during the orientation period.
- Compliance with Infection Control, Standard Precautions, and OSHA standards for healthcare professionals.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment as needed.

Pay
The estimated range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00 per hour. Final offers are based on various factors, including skill set, experience, location, qualifications, and comparisons to colleagues in similar roles.
